Inside a traditional market in Hanoi abandoned for nearly 10 years, grass grows over people's heads

Although it was invested in and built spaciously, Xuan Phuong market (Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) has been abandoned for nearly 10 years. According to Dan Viet reporters, the outside of the market is overgrown with grass, and the inside has become a place where many workers live.

Xuan Phuong Market is located next to the dual carriageway connecting Xuan Phuong urban area to National Highway 32.

According to Dan Viet reporters, some sections of the fence have cracks, rusty iron, and overgrown trees, growing taller than a person.

The main gate to the market is shabby, with vines growing all over the walls.

Inside the market, the trees are overgrown, growing taller than people's heads.

Residents in the area said that Xuan Phuong ward has a traditional market, managed by Xuan Phuong cooperative, but it only meets once every 5 days. If people want to go to the nearest market, they have to travel about 2 km to Van Canh market (Hoai Duc district).

The back of the market is quite new but can't be walked because of overgrown grass and trees.

The iron fence at the back gate of the market was sawed off, this is one of the paths for people living inside the market.

The inside of the market is currently being used by a group of workers as a place to live and work.

"People living inside the market are mainly workers from other places," said a resident near the market.

According to urban planning experts, Hanoi currently has many newly built traditional markets that have been abandoned. Spending a large amount of money to build traditional markets and then abandoning them is a waste of state assets. The first responsibility belongs to the local government, but besides that, other objective reasons such as the ubiquitous convenience store system have also changed people's shopping needs compared to before.

The market is located on Phuong Canh dual carriageway with 6 lanes, very convenient for travel.
