Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital achieved diamond certification in stroke treatment

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/11/2023

On November 25th, Dr. Nguyen Ba Thang, Head of the Neuroscience Center and Head of the Stroke Unit at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City (UMC Hospital), stated that the diamond certification is the highest certification awarded to stroke units and centers that meet a series of stringent and rigorous standards set by the WSO.

The key performance indicators related to stroke emergency care and treatment include: time from hospital entrance to thrombolytic therapy (door-to-needle time), time from patient arrival at the hospital entrance to thrombectomy (door-to-intervention time), percentage of patients undergoing emergency CT or MRI scans, percentage of stroke patients receiving reperfusion therapy, etc.

The door-to-hand time should not exceed 30 minutes.

The University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City has achieved a series of top-tier quality indicators in this field. Notable indicators include door-to-needle time (the time from the hospital entrance to the administration of thrombolytic therapy). Not exceeding 30 minutes compared to the general standard of under 60 minutes. Door-to-intervention time was within the optimal range (time from hospital entrance to needle aspiration for thrombectomy); 100% of patients suspected of stroke were diagnosed by CT or MRI within the first 15 minutes, while the standard was 45 minutes.

Most notably, the rate of stroke patients receiving reperfusion therapy has now reached over 25%. No stroke cases have been missed or delayed in the emergency care, treatment, and care process at the hospital. This is also the result of the continuous efforts of the medical staff in improving the professional quality, facilities, and care services of the entire hospital in general and the Stroke Unit in particular.

At the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, a complete stroke emergency team is on standby 24/7, including neurologists and stroke specialists, emergency physicians and nurses, CT and MRI technicians, and an endovascular thrombectomy team. With its state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, the hospital can perform all advanced stroke emergency techniques available worldwide .

The University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City has achieved Diamond certification in stroke treatment from the World Stroke Organization (WSO).

Application of artificial intelligence in the treatment of emergency stroke.

The hospital has also applied artificial intelligence in the treatment of acute stroke and the assessment of cerebral infarction treatment, enabling it to provide emergency care even to patients who unfortunately arrive late, up to 24 hours after the onset of the disease. In particular, with its strength in seamless multidisciplinary collaboration, many stroke patients with complex underlying conditions are consulted by specialists, helping to improve treatment effectiveness and recovery for patients.

At the Stroke Unit of the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, the stroke emergency protocol is activated as soon as a patient is brought to the hospital. The rehabilitation process is developed based on the patient's changes immediately after emergency treatment. From there, appropriate functional improvement methods are devised to help patients adapt quickly to bodily changes and return to daily life sooner.

Dr. Thang noted that there are still misconceptions about emergency stroke treatment such as: scraping the skin, drawing blood, performing rituals, taking folk remedies, transporting patients on motorbikes, waiting for the patient to recover... These are reasons why patients do not receive proper emergency care, leading to many unfortunate consequences.

"Remember the signs and how to handle them with the phrase: 'A crooked smile, slurred speech, drooping arms - Call emergency services immediately, go now, don't wait,' quickly take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible for timely emergency care and treatment," Dr. Thang emphasized.
