Recently, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) issued an official dispatch requesting units to coordinate and ensure blood supply for patients after Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital announced that it had run out of chemicals and medical supplies for screening and preparing blood, and requested 74 hospitals in the Mekong Delta region to use blood "economically".
On June 4, speaking to reporters, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Viet, Director of Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, said that the hospital currently only provides red blood cells for emergency use and has requested them from many units over the past several months, such as: Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion; Cho Ray Hospital; Ho Chi Minh City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital...
Blood donation in the Mekong Delta is abundant but there is a shortage of blood collection bags, chemicals and medical supplies for screening.
"Platelets with rare blood types are not available due to lack of chemicals and medical supplies for screening and preparation. Blood donated by people in the Mekong Delta is abundant, however, the hospital lacks blood collection bags and screening chemicals (for HIV, hepatitis C, syphilis testing, etc.)" - said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Viet.
The reason for the above shortage of chemicals and medical supplies, according to Dr. Viet, is due to the waiting for bidding from 2022 until now, which has not been implemented. The Director of Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital shared: "The bidding process must go through 3 rounds: purchasing decision, bidding package estimate, contractor selection plan, then the hospital sells the documents and then conducts the bidding, but currently the departments, branches and the city have not approved it, so the bidding cannot be carried out."
Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital provides 12,000-15,000 units of blood per month to 74 hospitals in 11 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta. With the current limited blood supply, this hospital only provides blood for emergencies, while surgeries, diseases requiring blood transfusion or treatment... have to wait.
On June 3, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management issued an official dispatch on coordination to ensure the supply of blood and blood products in emergency and treatment for patients after receiving an official dispatch from the Department of Health of Bac Lieu province regarding the Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital's announcement to temporarily stop supplying blood and blood products to Bac Lieu General Hospital.
In the immediate future, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment will assign the Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and the National Blood Center to coordinate. Coordinate with blood transfusion centers of Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital; Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital and other blood transfusion centers to ensure the supply of blood and blood products.
Can Tho Department of Health directed Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to immediately implement short-term and long-term solutions to provide enough blood and blood products for hospitals within its coverage area; continue to implement solutions to ensure medicines and medical equipment to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment; take responsibility if the shortage of blood and blood products affects patients.
