Harris and Trump, the two candidates in the US presidential election who had just had a heated debate, shook hands and exchanged a few words, then lined up to attend the memorial service. There were no official statements at the "ground zero" site where the planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center 23 years ago.

The annual ritual marks the terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda militants who flew two planes into the World Trade Center and another into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the terrorists.
After New York, Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris flew to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 overpowered the hijackers and the plane crashed into a field, preventing another target from being hit.
At the white marble memorial in the field, Mr. Biden gently placed his hand on a wreath to pay his respects to the 40 people who died in the crash. They then returned to the Washington area to visit a memorial at the Pentagon.
Meanwhile, Mr Trump, who had planned to visit the Pennsylvania memorial on Wednesday, told Fox News: "It's a very, very sad, terrible day. There's never been anything like it."
“We owe the patriots of the 9/11 Generation a debt of gratitude that we can never fully repay,” Biden said, citing military deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and other war zones, as well as the capture and killing of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden.
