On the evening of May 13, tens of thousands of people and Buddhists from all over flocked to the area around Hoan Kiem Lake ( Hanoi ) to worship the Buddha's relics - a national treasure of India - brought to Vietnam for the first time, on the occasion of the United Nations Vesak Festival 2025.
From 7pm, the convoy, elaborately decorated with fresh flowers, Buddhist flags and a brilliant lighting system, began parading through the streets of Ly Thuong Kiet, Hang Bai, Dinh Tien Hoang, Ly Thai To, Hai Ba Trung… before returning to Quan Su Pagoda.
The area around Hoan Kiem Lake, especially the intersection of Dinh Tien Hoang and Hang Khay streets, was packed with people attending the procession of Buddha's relics.
The moment people got to see the sacred treasure with their own eyes.
This is the fourth time that the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni have been brought outside of India.
The procession carrying Buddha's relics moves along the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake.
“I arrived here at 5pm and walked for an hour to reach Hang Khay Street. Despite the tiredness and the crowd, we felt very satisfied when we were able to pay homage to the Buddha’s relics. It was a sacred moment that is hard to put into words,” Ngoc Anh, a resident of Hoan Kiem District, said emotionally.
“When I saw the convoy of vehicles carrying relics pass by, I shed tears. I have studied Buddhism all my life, and now I have the chance to see the Buddha’s relics with my own eyes. What a great fate!”, said Ms. Thanh Huyen, from Thanh Xuan district.
Crowds of Buddhists and people stood waiting on both sides of the road to welcome the sacred treasure.
To ensure security, order and traffic safety during this major event, Hanoi City Police have deployed many checkpoints and traffic diversions according to specific time frames.
From 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., vehicles are restricted from entering some key streets such as Ly Thuong Kiet (from Phan Boi Chau to Hang Bai). Hundreds of police officers, militia and volunteers are on duty at hot spots around Hoan Kiem Lake to guide people, divide traffic and maintain security.
The invitation to Vietnam of the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni - one of the most sacred relics of Buddhism - has aroused special emotions in the community.
During the 3 days, from May 14-16, monks, nuns, Buddhists, people and tourists can come to worship the relics without having to register in advance. The time to worship and pay respect to the Buddha's relics at Quan Su Pagoda is from 6am to 9pm. After Hanoi, the Buddha's relics will be enshrined at Tam Chuc Pagoda ( Ha Nam province) from May 17-21, for monks, nuns, Buddhists and people to worship.
