Some 37,000 US troops stationed in Germany are facing uncertainty about their November paychecks as the US enters the longest government shutdown in history, despite a last-minute paycheck payment for October.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CBS News that "as of November 15, the men and women in uniform who are willing to risk their lives will no longer get paid" if the budget impasse between Democrats and Republicans over passing the federal budget continues.
The US Army has published guidance on its website directing soldiers in Germany to emergency welfare benefits, loans, food banks and food sharing organizations, where volunteers provide leftover food through public refrigerators.
German social benefits remain largely unavailable to US troops, meaning these soldiers will be on their own.

The US Treasury has stepped in to help around 12,000 civilian employees at US military bases, providing €43 million for logistics, catering, supplies and security staff, Euronews reported. The payment is a loan the US must repay after the budget freeze is lifted.
According to US media, the country's military received their October salaries through emergency funds collected from many sources: $2.5 billion from the summer tax cut law, $1.4 billion from military procurement accounts and $1.4 billion from research and development funds.
Recently, an anonymous donor who Mr. Trump said was a friend of his contributed $130 million to help pay the salaries of American troops during the government shutdown.
According to Blue Star Families, an initiative founded by military personnel, the aforementioned funding is crucial because “less than one in three military families has $3,000 in savings.”
Unlike the monthly pay system in many countries, US military personnel receive their paychecks biweekly, increasing cash flow pressures during pay periods.
Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune expressed optimism that senators would agree on a budget this weekend, potentially ending the government shutdown that began on October 1.
