BMW and Mercedes are racing to test and put solid-state batteries for electric vehicles into production vehicles as soon as possible. Mercedes-Benz revealed in February that it had begun testing solid-state battery technology on public roads with an EQS prototype. According to BMW, the ASSB battery integrated in its i7 test vehicle combines proven Gen5 construction principles (cells in modules) with new, innovative module concepts to integrate ASSB battery cells with sulfide-based electrolytes from Solid Power.
With higher energy density than current battery technologies, ASSB batteries have the potential to achieve longer vehicle operating ranges without the weight disadvantage of the entire storage system.
BMW and Solid Power have been collaborating since 2016, with BMW investing in Solid Power in May 2021 as part of the funding. The two parties have agreed to deepen their partnership by the end of 2022, when BMW will operate a solid-state battery prototype line at the CMCC (Center of Competence for Battery Manufacturing) in Parsdorf.
