Dropping out of college to work abroad: Spending billions to go abroad, receiving cold ashes in return

Báo Tây NinhBáo Tây Ninh25/06/2023

Editor's Note
In recent years, in the villages of Nghe An and Ha Tinh , students tend to study high school just to get a diploma, then go abroad to study vocational training or work abroad. The attraction of money has caused the number of students studying at university to decrease, even in some villages, there have been no university students for many years. The face of the countryside has changed with high-rise buildings springing up side by side, cars parked in front of the alley... from the money students send back home. But working abroad is not a path full of roses...

The dream of changing life ended

Not all excellent students who switch to labor export can earn billions of dong quickly. Working abroad carries many risks when being deported back to their home country, some even lose their lives in foreign countries...

At the end of October 2019, the tragedy of 39 bodies in a container truck in the UK shocked the world , including the victim Pham Thi Tra M. (26 years old, residing in Can Loc, Ha Tinh). Tra M. used to study at a college but dropped out to go to Japan to work. 3 years later, she wanted to go to the UK to work.

The family paid a broker $22,000 for the girl to cross the border to England. But her dream of changing her life ended when her family was shocked to receive the news that their daughter had died in a refrigerated container.

Besides the villas springing up everywhere, life changing thanks to overseas labor, there are also many tragedies behind the flow of foreign currency sent back (a corner of Cuong Gian commune, Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh).

But that lesson seems not to be enough of a wake-up call. Currently, in Ha Tinh, many children refuse to go to university or college, determined to go abroad. Families are willing to borrow billions of dong to help their children realize their dream of changing their lives. Many people even follow the illegal path, accepting the risk of not having the protection of the law.

A village official in Thach Kim commune (Loc Ha district, Ha Tinh) said: “The village has 463 people working abroad, the most in the commune, mainly through unofficial channels. Many of them refused even though they had passed the university entrance exam. Some of them went to university and then dropped out, some of them had a bachelor’s degree but did not find a job in their hometown but went to the US, Canada, UK, South Korea... to work.”

The female village official shared with VietNamNet that behind the foreign currency sent back home, there are many risks. The relatives of this female village official also fell into the tragedy of losing their daughter, leaving behind a debt of hundreds of millions of dong.

The female village official said that in early 2019, her nephew HY (her younger sister's son) passed the Accounting major at Vinh University, but Y. did not attend. She and her family agreed to spend more than 45,000 USD to go to the US to do nails.

For students with good academic performance, when faced with the choice of giving up university to work abroad, they should consider the risks and trade-offs.

Following the broker's instructions, Y. got a visa to Canada as a sponsor for a business owner on the other side, with a fee of 20,000 USD. After 2 months of working on a farm in Canada, the broker informed Y.'s family that they had used up all their remaining money to arrange for her to cross the border from Canada to the US by river.

However, since Y. informed her family that she was "preparing to board a boat to go to America", the family lost contact with her. After 2 days of waiting for news of her child, the family received the sad news that Y. had died due to a boat accident and drowning.

“We don’t know if the child died due to carelessness or was murdered. The family contacted the business owner in Canada and received the answer that Y. voluntarily quit her job and moved to another area, so she was not responsible. The broker also denied responsibility and only refunded $2,000 for the family to bring Y.’s body back to Vietnam. Because she crossed the border illegally, the family cannot ask the law of the two countries to intervene,” said the village official.

Sending children to study abroad, family has to sell land to pay off debt

Mr. Nguyen Tuan D. - a teacher at a high school in Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh, also admitted that not all excellent students who refuse to go to university and go to work abroad become rich and receive "sweet rewards" quickly. Among them, there are many cases of being deported back to the country when working illegally abroad.

Ho Van V. (born in 2003, residing in Thach Ha district) is an excellent student, having won many provincial-level Chemistry prizes. V.'s university entrance exam score for block A00 was 27.25. However, like many other students in this land, V. chose to study vocational training in Korea.

The male student's family spent 500 million VND including paperwork and deposit for V. to get a visa to study in Korea for 5 years. In addition, when coming to this country, V. paid an additional 100 million VND in tuition for the first year.

Because of his busy school schedule and lack of time to work while living expenses were high, V. dropped out of school after only 5 months. He ran away to find work and became an illegal worker.

After only 2 months of working, one time, V. and 30 others were taken home by their boss and arrested by the local authorities. This male student was deported back to his country.

“I have not seen any signs of getting rich or changing my life. After 7 months in Korea, I still have not earned enough to pay off my loan to study abroad. V. was deported back to his country, carrying a pile of debt. Feeling self-conscious and ashamed, and to avoid gossip, he locked himself in the house for months. To reduce the pressure on his child, V.'s parents had to sell their land to pay off the debt,” said teacher D.

According to teacher D., many students shared that life in a foreign country is not "rosy". Some students sell their labor, work 10-12 hours a day, are abused by their employers, have their wages withheld, are discriminated against, and when they are sick, they have no relatives to take care of them...

"Many students who go to work abroad are lucky enough to earn a large amount of money, but they lose time and the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their thinking in university. When they return home and plan for the long term, it is difficult for them to find suitable jobs.

For those who are good and excellent students, when faced with the choice of giving up university to work abroad or study a trade, you should consider carefully. This path gives us a large and quick income but also has many risks. In my opinion, those who study well and are ambitious after graduating from university will not have difficulty finding a job, and may even own a job with a good income," added Mr. D.
