Initially, Mr. May, a farmer from Tan Thanh commune, Gia Rai town ( Bac Lieu province), bought 20 ostrich chicks (for nearly 50 million VND) to try raising them.
After two years of raising them, the ostriches have developed well, weighing between 90 and 110 kg each. Ostrich chicks weighing 5-6 kg each, fully vaccinated, are sold by Mr. May for 2.5 to 2.8 million VND each.
Typically, it takes 8-10 months for a commercially raised ostrich to reach a weight of 100-150 kg. The selling price of ostrich meat ranges from 100,000 to 120,000 VND per kilogram.
At this price, raising ostriches for breeding or for commercial purposes is highly profitable. Seeing the effectiveness of this specialty farming model, his family continued to invest and expand their farm.
"To successfully raise ostriches, breeders must first thoroughly understand the ostrich's habits and living environment," shared Mr. Do Truong May.

According to Mr. Do Truong May, the yard and cages for raising ostriches must be clean, and dry sand should be spread so that the ostriches can take sand baths to clean their bodies and remove external parasites.
"In addition, ostrich enclosures need to be large because these giant birds love to run around."
"Ostrich food is easy to find, mainly sweet potato leaves, water spinach, etc.," Mr. May shared his experience in raising ostriches, accumulated from 2022 to the present.
Along with developing the economy through the model of raising giant birds like raising chickens, Mr. May is always ready to share his experience in raising ostriches, provide guidance on ostrich farming techniques, and supply ostrich chicks, feed, and veterinary medicine to households.
In addition, Mr. Do Truong May also guarantees the purchase of ostrich breeding stock and meat, helping farmers feel secure and confident in investing in economic development.
The ostrich farming model not only brings high economic efficiency to Mr. May's family but also contributes to changing mindsets.
Mr. May's family's model of raising giant birds—ostriches—has also opened a new path for local people in Tan Thanh commune and in Gia Rai town, Kien Giang province, to start businesses and develop the economy on their own land.
