The family of Mrs. Luong Thi Hai (in Son Phu village, Thuong Loc commune) is one of the households with a tradition of growing coconut eggplant. With an area of only over 1 sao, but for many years now, the coconut eggplant has always brought a stable income to the family.

Ms. Luong Thi Hai said: "To help the coconut tree grow well and reduce watering, her family has applied the method of covering the soil with plastic sheets to help loosen the soil, prevent weeds and retain water for the tree. Thanks to suitable weather and soil conditions, this year the coconut tree has grown well, productivity has increased, fruit quality is highly appreciated, and the selling price is stable.

Currently, the retail price is 17,000-20,000 VND/kg, and the price at the field is from 13,000 - 15,000 VND. This price is relatively stable compared to previous years. It is expected that in the next 2-3 weeks, the eggplant will be harvested en masse, with each harvest 3-4 days apart."

Not far away, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (Son Phu village) is also starting to harvest the first batch of coconut eggplants. Thanks to timely planting and applying appropriate fertilization techniques, Ms. Van's more than 3 sao of coconut eggplants this year has a relatively high yield, with beautiful, consistent fruit quality. Before Tet, a few rows had begun to be harvested, at this time, most of the area is in the main harvest season.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van said: "Since mid-December, nearly 3 sao of my coconut trees have produced fruit. Before Tet, demand increased while supply was low, so the price of coconut trees was high, around 22,000 - 25,000 VND/kg. Currently, households have started selling, prices range from 17,000 - 20,000 VND/kg. On average, I harvest about 50 - 100 kg every 3 days. After deducting expenses, each crop of coconut trees brings my family nearly 30 million VND."

Thuong Loc coconut eggplant is planted by people in October, and harvested from the end of December (lunar calendar), but after Tet is the time for mass harvest and the season ends around the end of March (lunar calendar). Therefore, right after Tet holiday, in the fields of Thuong Loc commune, the atmosphere of labor and production becomes busy and bustling.

Besides harvesting, at this time, people also focus on weeding, caring for, and watering to help the plants grow well, maintaining a high rate of flowering and fruiting.

According to the locals, eggplant is an easy-to-grow plant, but to produce a lot of fruit, the soil needs to be kept moist throughout its growth period. In addition, from the time the plant bears fruit until the harvest, it must be fertilized with mixed fertilizer every 5-7 days. The eggplant harvest usually lasts 3-4 months, but if well cared for, it can last up to 5-6 months.

At this time, farmers both harvest and take care of the coffee so that it grows well, prolongs the harvest time, and gives high yield.

Thuong Loc coconut is not only sold at traditional markets in Can Loc district but also at wholesale markets in Ha Tinh city, Hong Linh town, Thach Ha district... With beautiful appearance and affordable price, this is an easy-to-consume agricultural product.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Thuong Loc commune, there are currently about 350 households growing eggplant with a total area of over 20 hectares, concentrated in the villages of Son Phu, Dong Thanh, Vinh Xuan, Son Binh... This year, the yield of eggplant is expected to reach nearly 13 tons/ha.

Talking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dieu - Chairman of Thuong Loc Commune People's Committee said: "Over the years, Thuong Loc coconut eggplant has produced high yield, consistent quality, gradually affirming its position in the market. Currently, people in 10/10 villages participate in coconut eggplant production, in which, the locality has planned a concentrated production area in Son Phu village with a total area of 5 hectares".

" Every year, Thuong Loc people produce two crops of coffee, the main crop is planted in October and harvested until April of the following year. On average, people earn from 10 to 20 million VND per sao, contributing to the effectiveness of crop restructuring and increasing income per unit of cultivated area, " said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dieu - Chairman of Thuong Loc Commune People's Committee .
