Rapper Doja Cat said she named her new song Balut - released on September 15 - after the popular street food of the same name. However, her explanation for the name has upset many Filipino listeners.
"I named the song Balut because it represents a bird being eaten. It's a metaphor for Twitter fans and the death of Twitter. The beginning of X and the end of tweeting," the rapper wrote on Instagram over the weekend.

On July 24, 2023, Twitter began changing its logo, with the letter "X" replacing the blue bird icon on its official account and website. This is the biggest change since billionaire Elon Musk bought the social networking platform in October 2022.
Few Filipino music commentators seemed impressed by the metaphor. Many corrected her that balut involved boiling or steaming a fertilized duck egg between 14 and 21 days old, not live poultry.
"Eat raw? Who eats raw eggs? You don't need to be ashamed of my culture if you don't understand it," one user wrote on X.
Another description of the balut, which garnered nearly 100,000 likes and many supportive comments in Tagalog and English, used a crying emoji that said: "Remember that a balut is a fertilized duck egg."
CNN has reached out to Doja Cat's record label RCA Records but has not yet received a response. Clearly, balut can be a divisive food.
Outside of Southeast Asia, balut often appears on travel and food shows, where it is sometimes seen as an unusual or bizarre dish that may challenge the palates of Westerners.
Balut (fertilized duck egg) is a favorite dish of many Southeast Asians.
However, such naming and explanation may be offensive to Filipinos, where the dish is considered a national delicacy.
While Doja Cat's explanation of the dish may not have gone smoothly, Filipino fans were able to see her reaction when she tasted the dish.
"Balut is delicious. It reminds me of liver. You can almost tell it's a small portion but it's got a lot of fat. I can taste the vitamins in it. You just know it's good for you," Doja Cat recounted on Instagram after posting an explanation of the song's title.
Balut is one of the songs on Doja Cat's fourth studio album Scarlet , released today, September 22.
