On the evening of April 24, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province held a ceremony to receive the Certificate of National Special Monument ranking for the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea at Ben Vam Lung Relic Site, Ngoc Hien District, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province Nguyen Minh Luan reviewed the heroic historical tradition of the army and people of Ben Vam Lung in the past. Accordingly, after the Dong Khoi in 1960, with the strong development of the revolutionary movement in the South, the need for weapons support for the Southern battlefield was increasing, while the land transport routes were facing many difficulties.

On October 23, 1961, the Party Central Committee and President Ho Chi Minh decided to establish Group 759 (the predecessor of Brigade 125, Naval Region 2 today) with the task of researching and opening a strategic North-South military transport route by sea, organizing the transport of cadres, soldiers and weapons to support the revolution in the South.

From that policy, the Central Bureau instructed the Southern provinces to organize boats to cross the sea to the North to report the situation and receive weapons to serve the resistance. In Ca Mau, comrade Bong Van Dia received the task of going to the North by sea, both to survey the transportation route, to explore and report to the Central.

After surveying the terrain, it was determined that Vam Lung Wharf was the most convenient place to receive weapons. The first train of the "unnumbered train" codenamed "Phuong Dong 1" carried 30 tons of weapons from Do Son Wharf (Hai Phong city) to open the way to the South on October 11, 1962. On October 16, 1962, Phuong Dong 1 ship commanded by captain Le Van Mot and political commissar Bong Van Dia safely arrived at Vam Lung Wharf.

Following that, the ships: Phuong Dong 2, Phuong Dong 3, Phuong Dong 4... transported thousands of tons of weapons from the North to support the battlefield in the South. At Vam Lung Wharf alone, 68 ships with more than 4,400 tons of weapons and ammunition were received.

Vam Lung Wharf is associated with the name of Group 962, whose mission is to protect the safety of trains entering and leaving the wharf, secretly receive, hide weapons and transport weapons to our armed forces units to serve in combat.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Luan informed that Vam Lung Wharf, part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea, is the first relic in Ca Mau Province to be ranked as a Special National Monument. "This honor belongs first and foremost to the officers and soldiers of the unnumbered train and the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea.

The Party Committee and people of Ca Mau would like to forever express their gratitude to generations of cadres, soldiers, compatriots and comrades who participated in opening roads, establishing wharves and operating at Vam Lung Wharf and the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea,” affirmed the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province.

To strengthen the work of preserving and promoting the value of relics in the coming time, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province Nguyen Minh Luan requested relevant units and local authorities to pay due attention to the work of managing, preserving and promoting the value of relics; propose to adjust and supplement the planning, mobilize investment resources to upgrade and complete the remaining items.

At the ceremony, Colonel Khuu Ngoc Bay, former Commander of Regiment 962, affirmed that the victory of the Ho Chi Minh Sea Trail not only contributed significantly to the overall victory of the resistance war against the US imperialists to save the country, but was also the path of the aspiration for independence, freedom and national unification; a symbol of the strength of great national unity. This was also a symbol of the strategic talent and art of war leadership of the Party, President Ho Chi Minh and the Central Military Commission in the war against the US imperialists to achieve the goal of completely liberating the South and unifying the country.

To commemorate and honor the resounding, immortal feats of the "numberless train", the noble sacrifices of the heroic soldiers and the people, the Party and the State built the Ben Vam Lung Relic Site with the following items: Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea Statue, traditional document exhibition house and a number of related works.

On November 26, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1473/QD-TTg ranking the Ho Chi Minh Sea Trail as a Special National Monument, including the main wharves: K15 Wharf, Hai Phong City; Vung Ro Wharf, Phu Yen Province; Loc An Wharf, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province and Vam Lung Wharf, Ca Mau Province.

Director of Ca Mau Provincial Museum Le Minh Son said that in addition to restoration and embellishment, the unit also pays attention to activities to promote the value of the relic in educating revolutionary traditions for all classes of people, especially the young generation. Therefore, in addition to adjusting the display at the relic, the unit has created a film explaining the value and historical significance of the relic; at the same time, coordinating with Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) - Ca Mau branch to digitize the relic display space, helping visitors to visit the relic even if they cannot go there in person.../.
