According to CNN, the popularity of Vietnamese iced milk coffee has prompted many foreigners to find ways to modify their Starbucks cups to taste like this drink. Currently, on many social media platforms, they are sharing with each other how to ask the barista to make salted coffee.
Back in 2010, the first salt coffee shop was founded in Hue . Mr. Tran Nguyen Huu Phong and Ms. Ho Thi Thanh Huong made a bold decision, which was to add salt cream to the milk coffee mixture. This combination created a smooth texture, helping to neutralize the bitterness in the coffee and balance the sweetness of condensed milk.
However, at that time, the general taste of Hue people was still black coffee or normal milk coffee, so this innovation could be considered a risk.
Both Mr. Tran Nguyen Huu Phong and Ms. Ho Thi Thanh Huong believe that the special name “Salt Coffee” will help them attract more customers, because according to the old concept, coffee can only be served with sugar or milk. To really make a difference, they need to create a new, more unique drink. That is how Salt Coffee was born.
Even Starbucks branches in Vietnam joined this salt coffee “wave” and launched their own version of salt coffee in April this year.
According to a report by global market research firm Mintel published in 2023, consumers outside Asia are increasingly interested in new coffee experiences and flavors. More specifically, 71% of Gen Z consumers interviewed by Mintel said they wanted to try Vietnamese coffee.
Mr. Phong and Ms. Huong expressed that they were very happy to have successfully created a drink that is loved by many people, and is even considered a specialty of Hue.
