Several whales washed ashore in Chiba, Japan just hours after a tsunami warning was issued on July 30 - Video : RT
Just hours after Japan issued an emergency tsunami warning following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula, a strange sight unfolded on the coast of Chiba: several large whales suddenly washed ashore and lay motionless on the sand.
The incident was quickly recorded and broadcast live on Japan's national television channel NHK around the late morning of July 30.
Images of giant whales lying still on the coast after a disaster warning have caused a stir on Japanese social media, with many calling it a "signal from the ocean".
Earlier, on the morning of July 30, RT (Russia) reported that a tsunami warning had been issued for coastal areas in Russia's Far East, as well as Japan, Alaska and Hawaii, after a strong earthquake occurred off the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The Japan Meteorological Agency immediately raised the tsunami warning level, saying waves as high as 3 meters were possible. They predicted the tsunami would hit between 10:00 and 11:30 (local time) along Japan's Pacific coast.
High waves have been recorded in Japan. At Ishinomaki port, waves of 50cm were recorded. In other areas, the first waves were around 20-40cm high. Officials warn that the second and third waves could be higher.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said there were no reports of serious injuries or damage. More than 900,000 people in 133 coastal municipalities from Hokkaido to Okinawa were under evacuation advisories.
Authorities are continuing to closely monitor the seismic and tidal situation in coastal areas. The Japanese government advises people not to be complacent and to continue to update information from official channels.
