At the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn, General Secretary To Lam and his wife paid an official visit to the Republic of Indonesia and the ASEAN Secretariat from March 9-11, 2025. Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam participated and accompanied the General Secretary at the official delegation's activities. This is an important event, affirming Vietnam's commitment to strengthening and developing the strategic partnership with Indonesia, while demonstrating Vietnam's active role in ASEAN, promoting multilateral cooperation and contributing to the common development of the region.
Visit to ASEAN Secretariat, Official Reception and High-Level Talks in Indonesia
On the morning of March 10, 2025, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking delegation accompanied the General Secretary to attend the official welcoming ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat and met with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and the Permanent Representative Committee to ASEAN. During the meeting, the two sides discussed ASEAN's central role in the region, commitments to promoting intra-bloc cooperation, as well as initiatives on connectivity, digital transformation and sustainable development.
On the same afternoon, in Jakarta, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation accompanied General Secretary To Lam and his wife to attend the official welcoming ceremony hosted by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The welcoming ceremony took place in a solemn atmosphere, demonstrating Indonesia's special regard for its strategic partnership with Vietnam.
Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien attended the high-level talks between General Secretary To Lam and the President of Indonesia. The two leaders had an in-depth discussion on the regional and international situation, assessed the outstanding achievements of cooperation between the two countries in recent times, and agreed on major orientations to enhance comprehensive cooperation, especially in the fields of economy, trade, industry and energy. The two sides also emphasized the importance of promoting economic and trade cooperation, improving competitiveness and supporting businesses of the two countries to access each other's markets.
Signing of cooperation documents
Under the witness of General Secretary To Lam and the President of Indonesia, the two sides exchanged many important cooperation documents. Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs exchanged the Letter of Intent on Cooperation in Capacity Building in the Field of Technology and Digital Economy, opening up opportunities for extensive cooperation in human resource training, technology transfer and creative industry development.
During the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also attended meetings between General Secretary To Lam and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Speaker of both Houses and the President of the Senate. At the meetings, the two sides discussed measures to promote cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries, emphasizing the importance of enhancing experience exchange, policy coordination and perfecting the legal framework to facilitate bilateral cooperation in many fields. The two sides also agreed to continue to closely coordinate in regional and international parliamentary forums, contributing to peace, stability and common development of ASEAN.
Attending Business Seminar and receiving large corporations and enterprises of Indonesia
During the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam attended the Vietnam - Indonesia Business Forum and witnessed the signing ceremony of cooperation agreements between businesses of the two sides.
At the Dialogue, typical enterprises of Vietnam and Indonesia reported on their plans and aspirations to develop and promote business cooperation between the two countries, contributing to the development of bilateral relations between Vietnam and Indonesia. The Dialogue is also an important forum for enterprises of both sides to explore investment opportunities and expand cooperation in the fields of trade, processing industry, renewable energy, digital technology and logistics. Opinions of enterprises of both sides highlighted the results of economic cooperation, investment opportunities and strategic partnerships in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital economy, green energy, electric vehicles and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP); discussed food security, the Halal industry, education and maritime cooperation, reflecting the increasingly deepening relationship between the two countries; reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to promote sustainable growth, innovation and regional cooperation, paving the way for an even stronger future.
During the visit, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also attended meetings and working sessions between General Secretary To Lam and leaders of large Indonesian corporations and enterprises such as Ciputra Group (real estate, urban infrastructure), Alamtri Resources Indonesia Group (energy, mining), Goto Technology Group (digital technology), Sungai Budi Group (agricultural and food processing) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). Leaders of Indonesian corporations expressed their interest and desire to increase investment, seek cooperation and business opportunities with Vietnamese enterprises based on the potential and strengths of each enterprise, and expressed their confidence in the potential and prospects for long-term and sustainable cooperation between enterprises of the two countries in the coming time.
Upgrading Vietnam - Indonesia relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and aiming for bilateral trade target of 18 billion USD
On the basis of the good traditional friendship, with solid achievements, mutual understanding and trust, sharing many similarities in strategic interests and priorities, as well as a common vision on security, prosperity, and sustainable development in the region, on this occasion, General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto announced the upgrading of Vietnam - Indonesia relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The official visit of General Secretary To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation opened up new cooperation opportunities, affirming the two countries' commitment to promoting substantive and sustainable bilateral cooperation, contributing to peace, stability and common development of the region.
Indonesia is currently one of Vietnam's leading trade partners in Southeast Asia. In 2024, bilateral trade turnover will reach 16.7 billion USD, an increase of 21.2% compared to 2023. The two countries are aiming to increase trade turnover to 18 billion USD in the coming time.
