This is the first time General Secretary To Lam and Russian President Vladimir Putin have met at the Kremlin. In June 2024, as President, General Secretary To Lam presided over the welcoming ceremony and then held talks with Russian President Putin.

General Secretary To Lam is on an official visit to Russia and will attend the Victory Day celebration in the Great Patriotic War from May 8.

According to the Kremlin, this is the first bilateral meeting between Russian President Putin and a foreign leader on May 10. After the small meeting, the two leaders will lead delegations from the two countries to hold high-level talks and adopt important cooperation documents in the new period.

General Secretary To Lam's visit to Russia marks an important step forward in bilateral relations, affirming the long-term commitment between the two countries on a solid historical foundation.

"We consider General Secretary To Lam's visit to Russia an important event in the program of bilateral contacts at the highest level this year. What is special is that this event takes place in the context of the two countries celebrating important holidays, memorable days in history," Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Bezdetko emphasized.

The two countries just celebrated the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in January 2025, and this year also marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in the Patriotic War and the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's national reunification.

During a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on May 8, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that the Party, State and people of Vietnam always appreciate the valuable support of the former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation today in the cause of national liberation as well as the cause of national construction and defense.

In the context of rapid international changes, he affirmed that Vietnam "especially values traditional friendship and is ready to cooperate closely with Russia to elevate the relationship."

Figures from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade show that the exchange of goods between the two sides will reach 4.58 billion USD in 2024, up 26.1% compared to 2023. Of which, Vietnam's exports to Russia will reach 2.3 billion USD, while imports from Russia will reach 2.2 billion USD. In the first quarter of 2025, total trade turnover will reach nearly 1.1 billion USD - up 0.3% over the same period last year.

The two countries have set a trade turnover target of 15 billion USD by 2030, which has been mentioned many times by senior Russian leaders in previous meetings with the Vietnamese delegation.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, the important meetings between General Secretary To Lam and senior Russian leaders will create new momentum in bilateral cooperation in many fields.

This includes both traditional areas of cooperation and new areas with great potential such as economics, trade, investment, basic science, energy, high technology, artificial intelligence, etc.

This will create more important driving forces to realize the development goals of the Vietnam - Russia bilateral relationship, for the benefit of the people of the two countries, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region as well as in the world.
