How to sleep with air conditioning without a sore throat

On hot days, air conditioning helps many people have a cool, comfortable sleep.

There is no denying that air conditioning helps us sleep better, avoiding feeling hot and sweaty at night.

However, using air conditioners incorrectly or overusing them can cause damage to the body, especially the throat and upper respiratory tract. Accordingly, many people after waking up experience a sore throat, stuffy nose or a dry feeling in the mouth.

This condition is not only uncomfortable but also affects health if prolonged, according to health site Onlymyhealth (India).

Here are some causes of sore throat when sleeping in air conditioning and how to fix this condition.

Dry air

Air conditioners work by removing moisture from the air to cool it down. This makes the bedroom drier, making our throat, nose and mouth more susceptible to losing their natural moisture.

For people who have a habit of sleeping with their mouth open or snoring, this condition is worse when dry air goes straight into the throat, causing a dry, slightly sore feeling when waking up.

Dehydration

Dry air combined with not drinking enough water during the day will cause the mucous membranes in your body (including your throat and nose) to lack moisture. When your body is not hydrated, you are more likely to get a sore throat after 7-8 hours of sleep in a cold, dry environment.

Dirty air conditioner filter

Over time, air conditioners can accumulate dust and even mold. If the filters are not cleaned regularly, these substances can be blown back into the room, causing allergies, throat irritation, or even mild respiratory symptoms.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor indoor air quality can cause sore throats, coughs and many other symptoms.

Air conditioner temperature too low

Cool temperatures help the body relax, but if you set the air conditioner too cold (below 22°C), the cold air can constrict the throat muscles and dry out the nasal mucosa even more.

For some people, cold air also triggers a mild inflammatory response, leaving the throat feeling sore or tight the next morning.

Air conditioner wind direction

If the air conditioner blows directly on the face or chest, the continuous flow of cold air for hours can cause discomfort.

To avoid a sore throat when sleeping with air conditioning, you should adjust the temperature to 23-25°C so that the air is cool but not too cold.

Using a humidifier in the room helps keep the air from drying out, better protecting the throat.

You also need to clean the air conditioner periodically to remove dust and bacteria.

Drink enough water during the day and keep a glass of water next to your bed to help your body avoid dehydration.

Also, avoid letting the air conditioner blow directly on you and use saline nasal spray before going to bed.
