How to distinguish between AA battery types

Many people may think that AA batteries come in only one type, but that is not the case.

In fact, the codes indicate the chemical composition and performance of the battery. So, the symbols on AA batteries are important to understand, so that users will realize that not all AA batteries are the same.

In addition, understanding this information will help users avoid wasting money on buying unsuitable batteries, which can quickly add up to expensive AA batteries.

The Difference Between AA Batteries

Although they share the name AA, they are not all the same, with codes like LR6-BP4 and R6P AA UM-3 or cheap ones like LR6 and R6. All because they use different chemicals and work in different ways.

Among these, users should not use R6 or LR6 batteries for cameras or any devices that consume a lot of electricity. Devices such as cameras and flash need a lot of current. When using a high current, the voltage will drop, resulting in the camera not working.

The LR6 alkaline battery can start the camera, but when using autofocus or flash, the camera will immediately shut down. This is not because the battery is dead, but because the electrical load has pulled the voltage below the minimum threshold the camera needs.

So saving money by buying cheaper batteries is not a wise option for devices like cameras. That is why cameras often prefer NiMH (HR6) and lithium (FR6) batteries, while zinc-carbon R6 batteries should not be used for more demanding devices, like cameras.

All of these standards and regulations also apply to AAA batteries.

How to choose the right AA battery

When buying AA batteries, consider the device the user will be using. The symbols on the battery can help them identify the right battery. The performance rating on the battery, such as Heavy Duty, is arbitrary. Instead, pay attention to the code and number.

For cameras or devices that consume a lot of power, NiMH and lithium batteries are the best choice. NiMH batteries are rechargeable, while lithium batteries have high capacity and low internal resistance, making them more efficient. The only downside is that you will need a suitable charger if you don’t already have one.

FR6 lithium batteries are ideal for cameras. They have high capacity and very low internal resistance, meaning they can handle high currents without going bad. They are not rechargeable, but a set of batteries will last a long time with most cameras.

However, it is important to note that not all lithium batteries are safe for use in cameras. Choose 1.5V lithium batteries such as the Energizer Ultimate Lithium and avoid 3.7V lithium batteries.

Once you have mastered the above knowledge, users may no longer feel afraid of AA batteries. Using AA batteries is convenient, because when the battery runs out, users just need to replace it without having to worry about the device being stuck due to the exclusive battery.
