How to distinguish between different types of AA batteries

Many people might think that AA batteries only come in one type, but that's not actually the case.

In fact, the codes indicate the chemical composition and performance of the battery. Therefore, the symbols on AA batteries are very important because understanding them will help users realize that not all AA batteries are the same.

In addition, understanding this information will help users avoid wasting money on unsuitable batteries, preventing the cost of AA batteries from increasing too quickly.

The difference between AA batteries

Although they share the name AA, they are not all the same, with codes like LR6-BP4 and R6P AA UM-3, or cheaper options like LR6 and R6. This is because they use different chemicals and function in different ways.

Among these, users should not use R6 or LR6 batteries for cameras or any device that consumes a lot of power. Devices like cameras and flashlights require a high current. When using a high current, the voltage will drop, which may lead to the camera malfunctioning.

An LR6 alkaline battery can power the camera, but when using autofocus or the flash, the camera will immediately shut off. This is not because the battery is dead, but because the electrical load has pulled the voltage below the minimum threshold the camera requires.

Therefore, saving money by buying cheaper batteries is not a wise choice for devices like cameras. That's why cameras generally prefer NiMH (HR6) and lithium (FR6) batteries, while zinc-carbon R6 batteries should not be used for devices with higher demands, such as cameras.

All these standards and regulations also apply to AAA batteries.

How to choose the right AA battery

When buying AA batteries, consider the device the user will be using them in. The markings on the batteries can help them identify the correct type. The performance rating on the batteries, such as Heavy Duty, is arbitrary. Instead, pay attention to the code and numbers.

For cameras or devices that consume a lot of power, NiMH and lithium batteries are the best choices. NiMH batteries are rechargeable, while lithium batteries have high capacity and low internal resistance, making them more efficient. The only drawback is that users will need a suitable charger if they don't already have one.

FR6 lithium batteries are ideal for cameras. They have high capacity and very low internal resistance, meaning they can withstand high current without shutting down. The batteries are not rechargeable, but a single pack can last a very long time with most cameras.

However, it's important to note that not all lithium batteries are safe for cameras. Choose 1.5V lithium batteries like the Energizer Ultimate Lithium and avoid 3.7V lithium batteries.

Once users understand the above information, they may no longer feel apprehensive about AA batteries. Using AA batteries offers convenience, as when the battery runs out, users simply replace it without worrying about the device getting stuck due to proprietary battery technology.
