According to Professor Tran Van Hau, Can Tho University, who has been associated with Dak Nong durian trees for many years, durian trees need to have an active drought period to bloom.
This stage lasts for 3-4 weeks for durian to reduce bud growth and help flower buds differentiate. If the dry period is too short, durian will flower less or sporadically, not uniformly.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nhat's family in Quang Tin commune, Dak R'lap district (Dak Nong) has more than 1.5 hectares of 8-year-old durian. About 2 weeks ago, Mr. Nhat completed the steps of care, nutrition supplementation, and disease and fungus prevention for the durian garden.
He started to reduce the water so that the durian garden could enter the flower bud differentiation stage. However, all of Mr. Nhat's efforts in the past few days were considered a failure because of the heavy rain that lasted for many days.
Gardeners should spray NPK with high phosphorus and potassium content to inhibit shoot loss and help differentiate flower buds for durian trees.
Mr. Pham Tan Minh, Dak Nong Agricultural Extension Center - Agricultural and Forestry Seeds
Mr. Nhat said: “Unseasonal rain can put durian at risk of crop failure. My family’s durian garden has just been flooded not long ago, the trees have not shown signs of dehydration, the leaves have wilted, but when it rains, the trees grow new leaves again.”
According to Mr. Nhat, if the water is not kept at bay long enough, the durian garden will flower poorly, affecting productivity. In the coming days, after the rain stops, Mr. Nhat will stop watering again. However, he is worried that the durian will sprout early, making the flowers bloom will be difficult.
Mr. Nhat said: "To prevent the durian trees from being damaged, I sprayed water mixed with growth stimulant to limit the impact of unfavorable weather."
According to Mr. Nhat's experience, to help durian flowers develop evenly and not turn black, he supplements necessary micronutrients by using foliar fertilizers combined with growth stimulants such as Ga3, NAA, Brassinosteroids to support the flower bud differentiation process better.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Tam, Dak R'moan commune, Gia Nghia city said that the natural physiology of durian trees is to sprout once every 3 - 4 months.
If it rains early and there is too much water, the buds and flowers at the top of the branches will develop strongly (unwanted flowers), while the flower buds in the fruit-bearing area will fall into a dormant state (flower buds).
This will stimulate leaf growth on each flower cluster. At this time, nutrients are concentrated on nourishing the leaves, making the flowers smaller, the flower stems longer and weaker, affecting fruit set and fruit growth.
“Durian trees are in the water-holding stage to differentiate flower buds. If they encounter unfavorable weather conditions such as rainfall of 10mm/day, they can go into dormancy, the flowers will turn black, and it will be difficult to set fruit. In this case, it is necessary to spray "Medicines to prevent flower bud blight such as Antracol 70WP, Topsin M 70WP or Agri - Fos 400," said Mr. Tam.
According to Mr. Pham Tan Minh, Dak Nong Agricultural Extension Center - Agricultural and Forestry Seeds, prolonged rain will cause durian gardens to lose shoots, flower buds to differentiate poorly, making it difficult to manage nutrients, leading to uneven flower bloom, affecting productivity.
Heavy rain will cause the budding stage to coincide with the pistil and young fruit setting stage. At this time, durian does not have enough nutrients, leading to flower and young fruit falling off.
According to Mr. Minh, to control young buds without affecting the process of pistil and fruit set, Hi Potassium C30 or 7-5-44-TE should be sprayed to block young buds, helping flowers pollinate and set fruit well.
Before durian flowers bloom, spray foliar fertilizer containing Calcium - Boron + Potassium as recommended to increase the rate of fruit set; spray foliar fertilizer containing Boron 15 - 20 days after fruit set to limit the phenomenon of segment burning.
In addition, to limit the appearance of new shoots during the fruit development stage, spray MKP (0-52-34) at a dose of 50 - 100g/10 liters of water or KNO3 at a dose of 150g/10 liters of water, every 7 - 10 days/time from 3 - 12 weeks after fruit set.
