In recent days, people in Thuan Hung ward (Thot Not district) still remember and fear the landslide on Thom Rom canal, in Tan Phu area, which caused many houses to collapse, affecting daily life and travel in the area. Mr. Huynh Thanh Phong, whose house collapsed into Thom Rom canal, said: “Thom Rom canal has strong currents and many large ships carrying goods, so the canal bank often collapses. The area around my house showed signs of landslides a few days ago. My neighbors and I moved all our belongings out of the house. The next day (May 16, 2025), the canal bank collapsed, dragging down 4 houses and a section of the embankment to prevent landslides. Thanks to moving the property in advance, my family's damage was limited.”
The landslide occurred at 4:00 a.m. on May 16, 2025 on Thom Rom canal in Tan Phu area, with a length of 25m, a width of 5m and moved the adjacent embankment about 43m long, the section at risk of another landslide of 6m. The landslide completely damaged 3 houses and 1 rice paper kiln. Specifically, the landslide completely collapsed the house of Mr. Truong An Thong, with an area of 4.5m wide and 5.3m long, with an iron frame structure, concrete pillars, corrugated iron roof, corrugated iron walls, and a tiled floor. Estimated damage is about 50 million VND. Immediately after the landslide occurred, the People's Committee and the Steering Committee for Civil Defense - Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue (PTDS-PCTT &TKCN) of Thot Not district promptly directed the People's Committee of Thuan Hung ward to mobilize local forces to help people affected by the landslide to dismantle and urgently relocate items and belongings to a safe place; organize the installation of signs, stretch warning ropes and widely notify people around the area to know and avoid; at the same time, the locality continued to monitor developments in the landslide area and neighboring areas to promptly detect cracks and points at risk of landslides and promptly notify people to proactively prevent and evacuate to ensure safety.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dam, Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue in Thot Not District, proposed: “In order to promptly respond to and overcome the consequences of natural disasters, ensure the safety of people's lives and property and the State, and avoid affecting people's travel, daily life and production, the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue in Thot Not District recommends the People's Committee of Can Tho City and the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue in the city to support the locality in building an emergency anti-erosion embankment in the above area. According to the People's Committee of Thot Not district, in the face of increasingly serious landslides, the locality has urgently developed plans to prevent and combat landslides, protect river banks, and beautify the urban area.
