One day before being admitted to the Obstetrics Department of Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital for pregnancy monitoring, the pregnant woman TTTĐ (23 years old; residing in Tra Vinh province) had severe abdominal pain accompanied by signs of labor, first child, 34 weeks pregnant. After examination, the doctors discovered that the pregnant woman had a narrow pelvis, threatening premature birth, so the pregnant woman was transferred for emergency surgery.

Relatives of the premature twins were overjoyed when they were saved.

After birth, the two baby girls (weighing 2 kg and 1.8 kg) both had respiratory failure, slow breathing, groaning, chest retraction, purple lips... After 5 minutes of resuscitation, the two babies regained their pink color and were transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit (NICU) for monitoring and treatment.

At the NICU, the two babies were treated intensively with non-invasive ventilation, antibiotics, warm beds, intravenous feeding, and sterile care. After 6 days of treatment, the two babies were able to breastfeed well, had good milk secretion, and began to gain weight. They were transferred to the inpatient room with their mother.

Dr. Pham Thanh Huy, Department of Pediatrics, Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital, said that according to the World Health Organization, the more premature a baby is born, the higher the risk of health problems in the newborn period as well as the risk of delayed psychomotor development in the first years of life.

Premature babies are susceptible to cold in normal room temperatures because their bodies are not yet able to regulate their own body temperature and have little or no fat reserves under the skin. They need to be treated and actively supported in a neonatal intensive care unit. Here, their bodies are kept warm by being placed in an incubator or under a special heating system.
