Master, resident physician Dao Thanh Luu (Stroke Center - Nghe An General Hospital) said: Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in Vietnam as well as in the world . This is an acute disease related to the blood vessels that supply the brain, occurring when there is a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. The disease is divided into two main types: ischemic stroke (due to blood vessel blockage) and hemorrhagic stroke (due to blood vessel rupture). Of which, ischemic stroke accounts for about 80% of all cases.

There are many risk factors for stroke. People with underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, blood clotting disorders or cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia, heart valve disease are at high risk. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle, the use of stimulants such as alcohol, beer, tobacco or addictive substances also increase the risk of the disease.

Stroke is common in the elderly. However, it is currently on the rise in young people, especially those between the ages of 30 and 50. This is an alarming situation, causing a heavy burden of disease for families and society. Therefore, raising awareness about stroke, how to prevent it and early recognition of warning signs is extremely necessary in public health communication.

Some typical signs that help identify a stroke include: sudden weakness in one arm or leg, difficulty speaking, inability to speak, dizziness, loss of consciousness, disorientation in space or time. When detecting a relative or anyone with suspected stroke symptoms, if the patient is still conscious, quickly call an ambulance and take them to the nearest medical facility for timely assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

In case the patient is in a coma or has convulsions, first aid must be given properly: place the patient on his side, avoid hitting hard objects while waiting for medical staff to arrive.

To prevent stroke, people with underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease need to have regular check-ups, adhere to treatment, and combine a reasonable diet, a healthy lifestyle, and regular exercise. These are important measures to minimize the risk and serious consequences of stroke.
