Warning about online scams during Christmas season

DNVN - The need for advertising and promotions increases during Christmas, becoming an opportunity for bad guys to commit fraud. The Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) has just issued warnings about increasingly sophisticated tricks, from Christmas greeting emails, fake scholarships, to recruiting online collaborators and impersonating bus ticket sellers.

Many emails impersonating reputable brands such as Amazon, Shopee... are being designed sophisticatedly, deceiving users with attractive offers, such as discount coupons or limited-time rewards. These emails often lure recipients to access fake links, requesting to provide personal information or bank payments.

To avoid being scammed, the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that people carefully check email addresses and content through official channels, do not access strange links or provide personal information or bank accounts on unreliable sites.

Not only emails, some universities such as the University of Technology and the University of Industry in Ho Chi Minh City have discovered many fake invitations related to international student exchanges, promising scholarships from 25% to 100%. These letters use the name of the management agency but the signatures and seals are not consistent, causing confusion for students. To protect themselves, students need to pay tuition fees through the school's official channels and report immediately when detecting signs of fraud.

The Information Security Department recommends that people be careful of Christmas greeting emails that lure people to visit fake websites.

In addition, online recruitment tricks are becoming more and more popular. Fraudsters lure victims into becoming sales collaborators with high profits. Initially, victims receive small commissions to gain trust, then are asked to place large orders and have their money stolen. People are advised to carefully check information about recruiting units through multiple sources, do not provide personal information or transfer money in advance for suspicious orders.

In addition, the practice of forging train and plane tickets is also rampant. The subjects create websites or social networking sites that look like genuine agents, asking customers to transfer money in advance. After receiving the money, the subjects block communication and disperse assets. People need to carefully research the agent's information, verify the recipient's account before transferring money, and only book tickets through official channels.

The Information Security Department emphasized that people need to be alert and avoid becoming victims of scams, especially at the end of the year when online activities are more vibrant than ever.
