Samsung Electronics will launch a slimmer version of its Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy S25 Edge, on May 13, opening a competition with Apple for a slimmer design.
On May 8, Samsung announced that it will hold an online event “Galaxy S25: Beyond Slim Unpacked” at 9 a.m. on May 13. The event will be live-streamed via the company’s official website and YouTube channel.
Since the launch of the Galaxy S20 series in 2020, the company has maintained a three-model lineup for its S series, consisting of standard, plus, and ultra models. The upcoming S25 Edge will be the first new model in years.
Samsung has yet to reveal any details about the S25 Edge, but it is believed to be just 5.8mm thick, making it the thinnest of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones. It will have a 6.7-inch display like the Galaxy S25 Plus, but will weigh the same 163 grams as the standard 6.2-inch model.
The case will feature a titanium alloy frame with a ceramic finish to address structural strength concerns of thinner smartphones.
Despite being powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and 128 gigabytes of RAM — like the other S25 models — the S25 Edge will have to make trade-offs in battery life and camera performance.
The S25 Edge is expected to launch first in Korea and China, followed by a global launch, including the US market.
The launch will mark a showdown with Apple over thinner smartphones, as the US tech giant is expected to launch the 5.5mm thick iPhone 17 Air in September.
While Samsung and Apple are competing fiercely for the global smartphone leadership, Chinese manufacturers are rapidly gaining market share with slimmer models, appealing to consumers looking for more noticeable changes in smartphone form factors.
With thickness emerging as a new battleground for smartphone makers, the key will be how each company addresses the issue of battery life. Apple is also said to be compromising on battery performance for the iPhone Air, and some analysts have speculated that the company may introduce a dedicated battery case./.
