Carlsen slams table after losing to Gukesh

On the night of June 1, "chess king" Magnus Carlsen suffered a surprising defeat against Gukesh Dommaraju, even though he held an almost absolute advantage in most of the matches in the sixth round of the Norwegian Super Tournament.

In the standard game in round 6, Carlsen held black and pressed Gukesh with "slow but steady" moves, successfully capturing a central pawn.

Over the course of about 20 moves in the middle game, the computer kept assessing Carlsen as having a clear advantage, from -2 to -5, equivalent to having a rook advantage. Victory seemed to be in the hands of the Norwegian player.

But after Gukesh's 62nd move, the unbelievable happened. Carlsen suddenly slammed his fist on the board, causing the chess pieces to fall over. He then angrily shook hands with his Indian opponent and turned to leave.

Gukesh looked stunned, taking a few seconds to collect himself before also leaving his chair. Witnessing this historic moment, international commentators such as Grandmaster David Howell and International Master Jovanka Houska were stunned. International Master Tania Sachdev burst into joy at her compatriot's "unbelievable" victory.

Carlsen's return, continued to slam his king on the table and then hastily signed the minutes, showed his utter frustration.

Sachdev exclaimed: "Look how devastated Carlsen is. This is truly a historic moment for Gukesh with an unlikely victory. Because he has won against Carlsen for the first time right in the homeland of the world 's number 1 player."

Gukesh admitted he was "lucky" to win a game that "could have been lost 99 out of 100 times".

Former chess queen Susan Polgar called it "the biggest shock of the year" when Carlsen, despite having the advantage of time and position, made a serious mistake under time pressure. This was Carlsen's first defeat in standard chess since September 2024, but he still maintained his leading position in the overall rankings.

This victory was a sweet revenge for Gukesh, who had lost to Carlsen in the first round in standard chess. Although Carlsen still leads the table, this defeat shows that no one is invincible in this harsh tournament.

Round seven will continue to start at 10pm on June 2, Vietnam time with the following matches: Carlsen - Nakamura, Gukesh - Erigaisi and Caruana - Wei Yi.
