The Brazilian player was sent off after just 10 minutes of play.

The classic match of South American football - Brazil vs Argentina - is always very tense and full of fierce moves. That happened again when the two rival teams met this morning (November 22) in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Brazil and Argentina players committed a total of 42 fouls in this match. In the first half, both teams committed a total of 22 fouls (Brazil 16 times, Argentina 6 times). This is the highest number in a half of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in South America to date.

The referee pulled out a red card and that was the penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior of the home team.

In the 72nd minute, when Brazil was trailing 0-1, interim coach Diniz sent Joelinton and young star Endrick onto the field to refresh the attack. Just 10 minutes later, Joelinton was sent off after a "dropped the ball and hit a person" with Rodrigo De Paul. The Brazilian striker lost his temper in a fight that was no different from wrestling with the Argentine player.

Immediately after Joelinton was sent off, the camera panned to the stands and found that many Brazilian fans had left. They no longer believed that with 10 men, coach Diniz and his team could score against the reigning World Cup champions.

The South American Clasico at the Maracana began with a riot in the stands between two groups of fans. The match started after 30 minutes. Players from both teams committed a total of 42 fouls, 26 of which were committed by Brazil. In addition to Joelinton's red card, the referee also issued three yellow cards, all to the home team.

Nicolas Otamendi’s header helped Argentina beat Brazil away from home, a defeat that was all the more painful as it was the first time in history that the “Selecao” had lost at home in a World Cup qualifier.

Brazil have now dropped to sixth place in the South American qualifying round and are just two points behind Paraguay in the play-off spot. Meanwhile, Argentina are still leading with 15 points.
