Recently, many students of Hanoi University of Science and Technology reported experiencing stomachaches after eating meals during their national defense and security training on May 29. Among them, two students experienced vomiting and continuous diarrhea.
NHA, one of the two students, said that at noon on May 29, after eating military food, at 5:00 p.m. the same day, the male student showed signs of poisoning such as vomiting 5-6 times in an hour, headache, and dizziness. At 9:00 p.m., A. continued to have diarrhea. The male student was taken to the school's medical room by his friends and was examined and given medicine.
NHA said that in addition to himself, there were about 170 other people in the platoons who also had symptoms of stomach pain.
"After the military meal, we only drank water and didn't eat anything else. As for me, the conclusion was that it might be due to the change in weather," NHA said.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen, Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that immediately after learning about the incident, the Board of Directors and related units such as the Department of Facilities, the Department of Student Affairs, the Department of National Defense and Security, the University of Science and Technology Medical Center, etc. coordinated to inspect and review the provision of meals for students of national defense and security.
According to the meeting minutes, on May 29, 54 students had stomach aches during class and asked to go outside to use the restroom. On May 30, the school directly asked for students' opinions and found that 176 students had stomach aches.
Among them, 2 students experienced vomiting and were taken to the medical center for examination and medication. According to initial examination, these 2 students came to the medical center with signs of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and mild nausea.
A representative from the school’s medical center said that these were signs of digestive disorders, not food poisoning. The center gave the students medicine. The students’ symptoms of stomachache and diarrhea could also be due to changes in the weather.
According to Ms. Huyen, the meals provided to students during their national defense and security studies are all ordered from outside companies and samples are kept daily.
"After the incident, the school continued to survey students' opinions by posting survey forms at the door, students could report anonymously," said Ms. Huyen.
It is known that, immediately after working with relevant parties, Mr. Pham Ngoc Khiem, Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, requested the unit providing meals for military students to re-examine the process of preparing and providing meals for the school's national defense and security education class, and to ensure food safety and hygiene requirements.
According to research, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has organized centralized defense and security training for many years. In this course, nearly 700 first-year students study military at the school for 2 weeks. They have to eat and drink together and are not allowed to bring in outside food.
