Báo Cần ThơBáo Cần Thơ01/06/2023

The record for the tallest tree in Asia was announced this week, when a team of Chinese researchers announced the discovery of a giant cypress measuring 102.3m in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The cypress tree, scientifically named Cupressus torulosa, was found in the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon National Nature Reserve in Linzhi City, in a study led by scientists from Peking University this May.

The team used drones and laser radar to map the cypress area and confirmed the existence of the 102.3m tall tree.

They also discovered a large number of trees over 85m tall, including 25 trees over 90m tall. The discovery also makes this area the place with the highest density of giant trees in China and Asia after accurate measurements.

Mainly distributed in southeastern Tibet, Cupressus torulosa is not abundant and concentrated in small areas. This is a tree species that has been listed as a top national protected species.

China's previous tallest tree was a fir tree, measuring 83.4m, discovered by scientists in Tibet in 2022.
