The Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025 is approaching, at this time, farmers growing shallots in Ninh Son and Bac Ai districts of Ninh Thuan province are busy harvesting shallots to serve the Tet market.
In the shallot fields in the communes of Luong Son, Tan Son town (Ninh Son district, Ninh Thuan province)... the atmosphere of people harvesting shallots is bustling.
To meet the buyers' demand, farmers gather to harvest the shallots early in the morning and in the evening. Families who grow shallots must hire local workers to do the work.
Mr. Nguyen Tan in Tra Giang 3 village, Luong Son commune said: Tet pickled onion crop is the main crop of the year, so every year my family grows it to increase family income.
Currently it is the peak harvest time of pickled onions so a lot of labor is needed to harvest and transport them to markets outside the province.
Harvesting at night ensures that the pickled onions are fresh and retain their spicy flavor when they reach consumers. Thanks to favorable weather, this year's pickled onion crop has a high yield, so pickled onion growers are more profitable than last year.
In the shallot growing areas in the communes of Phuoc Dai, Phuoc Chinh, Phuoc Thang, Phuoc Tien, Phuoc Hoa (Bac Ai)... the atmosphere of harvesting shallots by the people also takes place bustlingly from early morning to late afternoon.
For this year's Tet pickle crop, Mr. Ngo Nguyen Vy's family in Ninh Son district rented nearly 3.5 hectares in Ha La Ha village, Phuoc Thang commune for production.
After more than 4 months of planting and caring, these days his family is hiring workers to focus on harvesting pickled onions to sell to traders.
Mr. Vy said: This year, thanks to favorable weather, the shallots grew well, especially when the shallots were forming bulbs, the weather was cold in the late afternoon so the shallots were big, even, and more productive than last year.
Currently, the selling price of pickled onions is from 30,000-32,000 VND/kg depending on the quality and size of the onion, so people are very excited and have a warm Tet holiday.
This year's Tet shallot crop, Ninh Son and Bac Ai districts planted more than 130 hectares of shallots, with an estimated yield of about 1-1.2 tons/ha.
Pickled onions here are known for their fragrant, crunchy and sweet taste. After harvesting, a portion of the pickled onions are sold locally, the rest are collected by traders and sold in Binh Thuan province, Ho Chi Minh City, and some provinces in the Southwest.
During the peak season serving the Tet market, hundreds of local workers have extra jobs to increase their family income.
Ms. Chamaléa Thi Lam in Ha La Ha village, Phuoc Thang commune shared: Every year, during the Tet onion season, people in the village have jobs and stable income from planting, caring for and harvesting onions with a stable income of 170,000-200,000 VND/day.
In particular, during the peak harvest season, some people earn over 300,000 VND/day from harvesting onions, which helps people earn extra income for Tet shopping.
Ms. Ngo Thi Cuc, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Ai district, (Ninh Thuan province) said: In recent years, taking advantage of water resources in Song Sat, Tra Co, Song Cai, and Tan My lakes, many households have boldly expanded the area of scallion production for Tet.
The Department regularly focuses on promoting and supporting farmers in implementing models of transferring science and technology into production.
Thanks to that, most of the people's Tet onion growing areas have grown and developed well, achieving quite high yields. Currently, it is the main harvest season for onion bulbs, thanks to the high yields, many households have made higher profits than last year.
