People of Tan Bac village (Pac Ta commune) take care of durian custard apples.
In 2024, when Pac Ta commune piloted the durian custard apple growing model (an agricultural extension program of the Agricultural Service Center of Tan Uyen district (old) with support for seeds and fertilizers for participating households), Mr. Nguyen Van Son's family in Tan Bac village boldly registered. With 60 durian custard apple trees planted on rice fields, he focused on taking care of them to ensure the process, especially the stage of pest and disease prevention.
Mr. Son shared: “Durian custard apple is a new crop for Pac Ta commune, I was very careful when deciding to plant and care for it. Besides, I and other durian custard apple growers in the commune regularly exchange, learn and gain experience from successful models in other localities. Currently, my family's durian custard apple area has begun to bear fruit, hopefully it will bring high income in the near future.”
In previous years, on an area of more than 4,000 square meters of agricultural land, Mr. Pham Thanh Tuan's family in Tan Bac village mainly grew rice and vegetables, but the economic efficiency was not as high as expected. In 2024, he converted to planting 400 durian custard apple trees, actively caring for and fertilizing the custard apple trees with organic fertilizer 2-3 times/year. At the same time, he pinched and pruned the branches to spread the canopy and control the height, helping the trees grow evenly. Currently, the entire area is bearing fruit, expected to yield the first harvest at the end of 2025.
According to households growing durian custard apple in Pac Ta commune, the technique of planting and caring for this tree is not too complicated, but the tree does not like water, so it is necessary to focus on irrigation and drainage. In the early stages of growth, durian custard apple trees are often eaten by worms that eat leaves and young buds, so it is necessary to monitor and check regularly to promptly detect and use pesticides to prevent and control them.
The durian custard apple tree has many outstanding advantages compared to other custard apple varieties. The average fruit weight is from 500 - 600g, some even over 1kg, twice as much as traditional varieties. The fruit has few seeds, thin skin, characteristic aroma, rich sweetness and eye-catching appearance, favored by the market; price from 120 - 150 thousand VND/kg.
Comrade Nguyen Van Son - Vice Chairman of Pac Ta Commune People's Committee said: "The commune encourages people, businesses, and cooperatives to invest in growing fruit trees. In particular, focusing on converting ineffective agricultural land to growing jackfruit and custard apple. Up to now, the commune's fruit tree area has reached more than 162 hectares, of which more than 5,000 square meters are durian custard apple. Because the economic value of durian custard apple is relatively large and it is a new crop, the Commune People's Committee has assigned specialized staff to accompany people from the planting and care stages to increase efficiency."
Aiming to develop concentrated commodity agriculture with high economic value, Pac Ta commune has been accompanying the people to exploit the maximum advantages and diversify new crops with high economic value. We believe that with their boldness and daring to innovate, farmers in Pac Ta will successfully implement a new economic model from durian custard apple varieties, enriching their families and their hometown.
