Determined to stay in Vietnam for the sake of the person I love
On the TikTok channel, videos sharing Thai Thao's (born 1996, from Da Nang ) happy marriage with her German husband attract hundreds of thousands of views and likes.
In particular, videos recording the Western son-in-law returning to his father-in-law's hometown to attend his father-in-law's death anniversary, accompanying his wife to a traditional Vietnamese wedding... received the most attention. The way he was willing to integrate into Vietnamese culture made many people feel interesting and cute.
The couple decided to date after only 1 month of getting to know each other online.
Thai Thao's husband is named Heiko (born in 1991), from Munich, Germany. The couple met by chance on Facebook in mid-2021, Heiko was the one who took the initiative to make friends and text to get to know each other.
After texting continuously for 3 weeks, Thao did not see Heiko suggest a video call so she was a bit suspicious of the other person.
Later she found out that at that time he was backpacking in Europe and the internet was unstable so he couldn't make a video call.
“After returning to Germany, he video called me and told me that he had previously traveled to Hue and because he loved it so much, he stayed in Hue for 2 years. It was not until the Covid-19 pandemic became severe that he returned to Germany,” Thao said.
After a month of chatting online, the couple officially started dating even though they had never met in person. 6 months later, Heiko was able to get a visa to Vietnam to meet Thao.
Their love grew stronger after meeting each other.
The day Heiko arrived in Vietnam, Thao went to the airport to pick him up. The first moment they saw each other, they felt close and familiar as if they had been together for a long time. Since then, the couple met every day and traveled all over Vietnam together.
Heiko was loved by Thao's parents so he was always present at every meal and every special event of the family. Having met the girl he loved and found a suitable land to live and work, he chose to stay in Vietnam.
Western son-in-law loves Vietnamese culture
In January 2023, Heiko's mother came to Vietnam to discuss the wedding. Both families decided to hold the wedding in Vietnam, following traditional customs.
The couple will get married in January 2024.
Heiko and his family performed all the traditional Vietnamese wedding rituals.
Exactly one year later, the couple's wedding was held in a grand manner. Heiko's family and friends from many countries flew to Vietnam to attend the wedding. Heiko asked his foreign friends to help carry the trays.
His parents also performed all the rituals of exchanging the bride and receiving the bride, lighting incense for the ancestors, exchanging betel and wine, dowry, giving wedding gold to the bride and groom...
“My wedding was very happy because both sets of parents and friends from near and far came to attend. Everyone had memorable experiences,” Thao said.
The couple currently lives and works in Da Nang. Entering their marriage, their love is still as full as it was in the beginning. "What I love most about him is his closeness and friendliness. He is a good listener so all conflicts are resolved peacefully."
Heiko is willing to learn and integrate into Vietnamese culture. He has experience in cooking, preparing, making offerings, and celebrating traditional Tet in Vietnam...
Thao said that every time he helped his wife's parents prepare the offerings, he asked carefully about each step and the meaning of the ceremonies and rituals. After being guided many times by everyone, Heiko was proficient in everything from preparing the offerings, lighting incense, to lighting candles, pouring wine...
Even helping to carry the tray of food to the altar and bring it down to receive the blessings, he did it naturally like any other son-in-law.
Video of Heiko following his father-in-law and wife back to their hometown for the death anniversary attracted hundreds of thousands of views.
“At the end of December 2024, Heiko followed me and my father back to the countryside for the New Year's Eve party. Seeing the ladies preparing food in the kitchen, he also rolled up his sleeves to help. Seeing the uncles and aunts sitting and chatting, he also came over to get to know them.
People were curious and asked him why he spoke Vietnamese so well, and how he knew how to help the uncles carry the tray of food to the altar like a Vietnamese son-in-law. People praised him for being handsome, kind, and cheerful... ", Thao said.
Heiko himself also had a wonderful experience when he and his wife returned to their hometown to celebrate the death anniversary. He loved the feeling of helping people, enjoying the close-knit, family atmosphere when family members cooked together, chatted, ate happily...
"I feel welcomed and treated warmly and enthusiastically by everyone. I am very happy and joyful about that," Heiko said.
Previously, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2023, Heiko and Thao's family wrapped banh tet and prepared offerings for New Year's Eve... He also stayed up late to watch the pot of banh tet and eagerly awaited the moment to scoop the banh tet out.
There were times when Thai Thao was surprised by Heiko’s integration. “My husband especially likes attending Vietnamese weddings, and even has experience carrying the wedding tray twice. Once, he made the photographer laugh because of his funny poses.
Honestly, Heiko stayed in Vietnam not only for himself but also because Vietnam is so beautiful and has wonderful cultural features," Thao said.
