Journey to conquer the peaks
If only looking at chemical equations or in-depth formulas, many people may not see another outstanding aspect of Duc Nguyen with his outstanding English ability. Right from primary school, he soon showed his quick linguistic thinking and confidence in presentations, demonstrated through the second prize in English eloquence in grade 3 and first prize in grade 4. Entering middle school and high school, Duc Nguyen's achievements were increasingly extended with a series of first and second prizes in the province's excellent English students in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9. Notably, from grade 8, Nguyen achieved an IELTS certificate of 7.5 - a rare achievement for students of this age. Most recently, he continued to affirm his ability when he won a gold medal in grade 11 at the National Internet English Olympic Competition in the 2025 school year (skipping level).
Despite his many outstanding achievements in English, Duc Nguyen's greatest passion is still Chemistry, a field he pursues seriously and deeply. Since grade 8, Nguyen won second prize in Chemistry at the provincial level (advance exam) and received a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee. In grade 9, he continued to affirm his ability with first prize at the provincial level, and in grade 10, he excelled in winning second prize at the provincial level (advance exam).
These results are followed by a series of outstanding achievements such as the Gold Medal in Chemistry at the Hung Vuong Summer Camp Olympic in 2025 and the Bronze Medal in Chemistry in the competition for excellent students of specialized schools in the Coastal and Northern Delta regions. Currently, Duc Nguyen is a member of the national Chemistry team, an important milestone in his journey to pursue his passion for science .
Besides Chemistry and English, Mathematics is also a subject that Duc Nguyen especially loves. Right from Primary and Secondary school, he has had many outstanding achievements, typically: Second prize in the Provincial Math Competition in English on the Internet when he was in Grade 2; Silver medal in the HKIMO International Math Competition in Grade 6; Bronze medal in the HKIMO National Math Competition in Grade 7; Ranked 3rd at the school level in the AMC8 International Math Competition in Grade 7. By Grade 10, Duc Nguyen continued to maintain his impressive performance when he achieved an absolute average score in Math: 10.0 for the whole year.
The secret to comprehensive learning
Having achieved excellent results in both seemingly opposite fields of natural sciences and foreign languages, Duc Nguyen said his secret lies in his ability to manage his time effectively and set clear goals for each subject. He always tries to complete his homework. In Chemistry, it is important to understand the nature of reactions and laws, not just memorize. He often does advanced exercises, especially Olympic exam questions to practice problem-solving thinking, and consults specialized documents in English.
Duc Nguyen shared: English is not only a subject but also a tool to help me access a huge source of Chemistry documents in the world . Thanks to that, I can update my knowledge more quickly and deeply.
For English, Duc Nguyen mainly focuses on practicing communication and reading comprehension of academic documents. To maintain his skills, Nguyen often watches movies, listens to podcasts and reads English books.
“I think the most important thing to be good at English is to make it a part of daily life, not just a subject,” Duc Nguyen expressed.
Indispensable companionship from family
Behind Duong Duc Nguyen's outstanding results is the support of his mother, Ms. Ngo Phuong Thanh, a Biology teacher at Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted, who is also a teacher participating in teaching the school's National Excellent Student Team. Duc Nguyen is lucky to have a mother who is always a companion, encouraging, motivating and guiding him in his studies.
Ms. Ngo Phuong Thanh shared: I always respect my child's passion. When I saw that Nguyen liked Chemistry and had a talent for English, the family always created the best conditions for him to develop. I did not put pressure on him but only encouraged him to do his best and study with joy. I only played the role of a guide and provided materials.
With the awards and outstanding achievements he has achieved, Duc Nguyen is not only the pride of his family and school, but also becomes a typical model of the new-age student: solid in knowledge, proficient in foreign languages and full of ambition. Nguyen's immediate goal is to conquer the National Excellent Student Exam scheduled to take place at the end of December 2025, and further, to open the door to a prestigious university, continuing to pursue his academic journey.
Nguyen has become a strong source of inspiration for the young generation, sending the message: nurture your passion and constantly strive to improve yourself, to become the best version of yourself.
