With its web search integration, ChatGPT is competing with rivals like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini, according to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology company OpenAI.
Users who subscribe to the ChatGPT Plus plan or are on the SearchGPT waiting list will immediately have access to real-time information provisioning, in chats.
ChatGPT is not designed as a separate search product, but is integrated directly into the existing ChatGPT interface. Therefore, users can manually enable online search when needed or let the AI chatbot automatically decide when to activate it.
ChatGPT's head of search, Adam Fry, tested the feature during a pre-launch demo when he searched for Apple's stock price and related information. The chatbot immediately returned an interactive stock chart along with the latest news articles from various sources.
According to OpenAI, the search feature will be available across all ChatGPT platforms, including iOS, Android, and desktop apps.
Prior to the integration of this feature, ChatGPT's knowledge was limited to data from 2021 or 2023, depending on the version. With search technology combined with Microsoft's Bing, ChatGPT users can get instant answers and direct links to reliable news sources.
OpenAI spokesperson Niko Felix said the company will continue to update the training data for its AI models to ensure users always have the most up-to-date information. However, this data is not trained simultaneously with OpenAI models.
OpenAI partners with major content partners like the Associated Press, Reuters, the Times, News Corp, and more to ensure that ChatGPT provides trustworthy and vetted information. ChatGPT's head of search, Adam Fry, says that ChatGPT is currently ad-free, which is a plus for ChatGPT over Google.
However, the cost of operating AI search is much higher than traditional search, and how OpenAI will support free users remains an open question.
More and more tech companies are getting into the AI search space. Google has just expanded its AI Overview feature to more than 100 countries. Meanwhile, Meta is also developing an AI search solution.
