Due to the sharp increase in wedding costs, many people still feel guilty about not having enough money in their envelopes even though they have nearly 1 million VND in them.

Many South Koreans are facing a dilemma: Should they give 50,000 won (more than 918,000 VND) and stay home, or go to the wedding hall and leave a bigger envelope?

According to a report from Asia Business Daily, the average cost per guest, paid by the bride and groom to hold the ceremony at a wedding hall in central Seoul, is around 82,000 won (1.5 million VND).

For weddings held at hotels, a meal costs between 130,000 and 200,000 won (2.3 million - 3.6 million VND). This fee puts pressure on guests to at least pay enough to cover the organization costs.

Kim, 20, shared: "If I go to a wedding, I have to give at least 100,000 won (1.8 million VND). I would feel guilty if I gave less. I heard that renting a wedding venue is very expensive. If I give 50,000 won, I think it is not enough."

With the bride and groom being close friends, Kim said the minimum amount he needs to give is 150,000 Won (more than 2.7 million VND) if he attends.

Kim once helped count the money donated at a family member's wedding.

He said some guests brought envelopes, put money in them, and signed them on behalf of those who could not attend. These envelopes usually contained 50,000 won, while those who attended in person would give between 100,000 and 300,000 won (VND 1.8 to 5.5 million).

Wedding costs in Korea have continued to rise since the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a survey by marriage brokerage company Duo Information, the average cost of a wedding in 2024, including venue rental and service packages, is up to 16.43 million won (over 301 million VND). This figure is up 18.2% compared to 2023 and up 28.6% compared to 2022.

According to an email survey conducted by Shinhan Bank with over 10,000 people, aged 20 to 64, 52.8% said they would give 50,000 won if they did not attend the wedding, 36.7% would give 100,000 won and 3.3% would give 200,000 won, reported the Korea JoongAng Daily .
