The most notable match in the 33rd round of the Premier League was the clash between Aston Villa and Newcastle, as both teams are fiercely competing for a Champions League spot. Both understood that a victory in this match could make their dream of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League a reality. That dream came closer for Aston Villa after they defeated Newcastle last night.

Aston Villa recently won 3-2 against PSG in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. However, this victory was disappointing as they were still eliminated with an aggregate score of 4-5. Putting aside the Champions League disappointment, Unai Emery's team is enjoying an impressive run of form domestically, with 9 wins in their last 10 matches. They still have a chance to win a trophy this season, the FA Cup, having reached the semi-finals against Crystal Palace, considered the underdog. Playing at home, Aston Villa then decisively defeated Crystal Palace 4-1.

On the other side of the pitch, although Newcastle were temporarily managed by assistant coach Jason Tindall (due to manager Eddie Howe's illness), the Magpies were in brilliant form. After winning the English League Cup after almost 70 years' wait, they thrashed Manchester United 4-1 and in the late match of the 32nd round of the Premier League, the Magpies thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 to move up to third place in the standings with 59 points. With their high form at this time, Newcastle hoped for another victory; however, against a superb Aston Villa, the Magpies ended their winning streak with a crushing defeat.

After the opening whistle, both teams, in excellent form, showed high determination for a victory. The pace of the game was very high with both sides exchanging attacks. Less than 20 minutes into the match, Aston Villa and Newcastle had both scored. Aston Villa opened the scoring in the very first minute, while Newcastle quickly equalized in the 18th minute. In the remainder of the first half, Aston Villa created several opportunities, most notably Watkins' header in the 27th minute. However, the post saved Newcastle. The first half ended in a 1-1 draw.

Surprisingly, after a closely contested first half, Aston Villa exploded in the second half, turning it into their own game. In the 65th minute, Ian Maatsen raced down the wing and beat Pope at a tight angle to make it 2-1; in the 73rd minute, Aston Villa extended their lead to 3-1 with an own goal from defender Dan Burn; and just two minutes later, midfielder Amadou Onana scored with a powerful shot to make it 4-1 for Aston Villa.

With the Premier League season drawing to a close, Aston Villa's crucial victory over Newcastle gives them a significant advantage in their quest for a UEFA Champions League spot next season. Last night, Manchester City also secured an important win against Everton, making the race for the top five – the positions that secure Champions League qualification – more intense than ever. However, by crushing a formidable opponent like Newcastle, Aston Villa are confident they can make their Champions League dream a reality, even though the Premier League season still has five rounds to go.
