Rochdale team substituted two players in just 30 seconds. |
The lower-ranked club made two substitutions almost immediately after kick-off. This was a loophole that made fans laugh and feel bored.
Under National League Cup rules, teams are required to field at least four players who started their last league game. Rochdale complied by naming Ryan East and Toby Adebayo-Rowling in their starting line-up – both of whom featured in the 0-0 draw with Woking in the English fifth tier on 25 October.
But exactly 30 seconds after the referee blew the whistle, Rochdale took the initiative to kick the ball out of play and immediately took two players off the field, replacing them with Jake Burger and Jack Griffiths. This action caused a fierce controversy. Many people thought that Rochdale was disregarding the spirit of the game, while coach James McNulty insisted that he was only following the rules.
Ironically, this was a successful loophole used by Robbie Savage, a former Manchester United player, a few weeks ago, when he made four substitutions after one minute in Forest Green’s 3-2 win over Wolves U21.
Rochdale, however, were not so lucky. The team lost 2-0 to the young Manchester United players, with Chido Obi and James Scanlon scoring. Despite the defeat, Rochdale made history in a way no one wanted. The team made the two earliest substitutions in the history of the competition – just 30 seconds into the match.
