According to Rooney, the bond between him and Tevez during the 2007-2009 seasons was “special” and was built on fighting spirit, sacrifice and understanding each other down to every move.
Speaking on BBC's The Wayne Rooney Show , the England legend said: “I loved playing with Carlos. When he arrived, the press said we were too similar to each other, we couldn't play together. But that made us both even more determined to prove otherwise. We were both strong, fierce, ready to fight and always supported each other. One played as a No. 9, the other dropped back as a No. 10, constantly switching roles - and everything happened very naturally.”
Rooney and Tevez were the main attacking duo of MU in the period 2007-2009, together with Ronaldo creating a destructive trio that helped the "Red Devils" win two consecutive Premier League championships and the 2008 Champions League. The two scored a total of 47 goals, symbolizing the intense pressing style of play and collective spirit that Sir Alex Ferguson pursued.
Although Ronaldo has always been a force to be reckoned with, Rooney credits Tevez with helping him play his football most naturally. “I had two seasons where I scored over 30 goals as a centre-forward, but to be honest, I got bored. I like being involved in the game, passing, combining, moving. Tevez helps me do that,” he added.
After leaving Old Trafford, the two went their separate ways – Rooney became a legend for Manchester United and England, while Tevez played for Manchester City, Juventus, Boca Juniors before retiring in 2022. Although their time together only lasted two years, Rooney insists that their relationship “is still one of the most special” in his career.
