Citrus fruit efficiency
Dong Le commune has nearly 3,000 hectares of forest land, including many areas of planted forests on relatively flat hills, near residential areas, and with irrigation water sources. Taking advantage of this, many people in the commune have boldly converted forest land to fruit tree cultivation, especially citrus fruit trees. To date, Dong Le commune has nearly 100 hectares of land planted with citrus fruit trees such as oranges, pomelos, jackfruit, etc.

In 2018, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hue , from Kim Lich village, received a loan of 100 million VND from the Farmers' Support Fund to diversify his crops and livestock. He converted 1.5 hectares of land previously used for growing acacia trees to growing Phuc Trach pomelos. Thanks to the suitable soil, climate, and irrigation water, along with diligent care, Mr. Hue's pomelo orchard has thrived. After four years, hundreds of pomelo trees have yielded their first harvests of sweet fruit. On average, Mr. Hue's orchard produces about 10 tons of fruit annually, generating a net profit of over 200 million VND.
Mr. Hue shared: “I find growing pomelos much more profitable than growing acacia trees. My pomelos are grown organically, the fruits are large and beautiful, so traders come directly to the orchard to buy them. In the future, I will continue to convert more forest land to growing pomelos, oranges, and red-fleshed Thai jackfruit to increase my harvest. To achieve that, I sincerely hope that the Party committee and the government will continue to pay attention to supporting us with capital, seedlings, fertilizers, and linkages to find markets for our products.”
This year, another bountiful harvest season has arrived for the family of Mr. Dinh Hong Son in Kim Son village. His orange and pomelo orchard, covering over 1 hectare, was planted many years ago. On average, he harvests about 6 tons of oranges and pomelos annually, bringing in over 120 million VND in income. Mr. Son shared: “Previously, my family grew cassava, peanuts, and acacia trees on this land, but the economic efficiency wasn't high. After watching TV and seeing that people in Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces were growing fruit trees on hilly land and earning high incomes, I went to learn from them and bought seedlings to try planting. Seeing that the trees grew well and the fruit was of high quality, I expanded the area.”
Enhancing the value of citrus fruits.
To develop and enhance the value of citrus fruit trees, the People's Committee of Dong Le commune has developed a project titled "Developing organic agriculture associated with production organization, increasing added value and protecting the ecological environment, giai đoạn 2026-2030", which includes the development of citrus fruit trees. Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Le commune, Dinh Tien Dung, said: "In implementing the project, the commune has organized training courses for farmers, provided financial support, technical assistance, and fertilizers to help them develop models; propagated and encouraged farmers to convert hilly land to cultivate citrus fruit trees according to organic and VietGAP standards, and build OCOP brands for their products; and signed agreements with specialized units to supply seedlings, fertilizers, and market products for farmers..."
Recently, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, residing in Tan Lap sub-district, converted 0.5 hectares of land previously used for forest and cassava cultivation to planting Indonesian red-fleshed jackfruit. The project required an investment of 40 million VND, of which the commune's People's Committee provided 20 million VND in support. With this support, Mr. Hung planted 200 jackfruit trees. Each tree is spaced 4.5 meters apart, with rows 4.5 meters apart, and planting holes over 60 cm deep and 1.2 square meters wide. Before planting, he also collected tree leaves for composting, combined with other organic fertilizers. In addition, Mr. Hung invested in a drip irrigation system for his orchard…
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung shared: “Before implementing the jackfruit cultivation model, I was given the opportunity by the commune People's Committee to visit and learn from successful jackfruit cultivation models. Afterward, technical staff were sent to guide me on planting and caring for the trees, and provided financial support for me to purchase seedlings, fertilizer, and build an irrigation system. As a result, the survival rate of the seedlings is high, and they are developing well. If jackfruit cultivation proves effective, I will expand the area and plant more citrus fruits to increase my income.”

According to the project "Developing organic agriculture associated with production organization, increasing added value and protecting the ecological environment, giai đoạn 2026-2030", Dong Le commune strives to plant an additional 47 hectares of citrus fruit trees by 2030, including 12 hectares of red-fleshed jackfruit, 25 hectares of oranges, and 10 hectares of pomelo, raising the total area of citrus fruit trees to approximately 150 hectares. This will create specialized organic fruit farming areas, aiming to have more OCOP products with 3 stars or higher.
According to Mr. Dinh Tien Dung, to achieve this goal, the commune will focus on training and improving the quality of human resources for commune officials, farm owners, cooperatives, businesses, and workers participating in the production model. The commune People's Committee will utilize funds from the state budget, social mobilization, national target programs, and socio-economic development programs; support people in converting production forest land to citrus fruit cultivation, and link with businesses to provide seedlings, fertilizers, technical support, and product distribution for the people…
