On April 3, an announcement from the Office of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives stated: "On April 5, Speaker of the US House Kevin McCarthy will hold a bipartisan meeting with Taiwan's leaders at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library."
Tsai Ing-wen’s trip marks the seventh time she has transited through the United States in her current position. It is also the 29th time a Taiwanese leader has transited through the United States. However, this will be the first time the head of Taiwan and a US House Speaker have met on US soil.
Speaking about the meeting, Taiwan’s representative office in Washington said that during her transit in the US, Ms. Tsai “will interact with American friends, in line with past precedents.” However, the agency did not say who she would meet or in what form.
Earlier in the day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning voiced strong opposition to official interactions between Washington and the Taipei government.
“There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Beijing will take resolute measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the official stressed.
