Pig farm owner in Hai Phong says there are no more pigs to sell, pork prices in the market are high

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt16/03/2025

Since the Lunar New Year (2025), the price of live pigs in Hai Phong has increased sharply and there are still no signs of "cooling down". Many small-scale farms have left their barns empty, feed prices have increased, and barns have not yet been repaired after storm No. 3 (September 2024). Therefore, the pork market is lacking a significant supply.

Pig price "jumps"

According to a survey by reporters at An Dong market (An Duong district, Hai Phong city), traders in the market are selling pork belly at 150 - 160 thousand VND/kg, and shoulder meat at 130 - 140 thousand VND/kg.

Other meats such as ham hocks and rumps range from 130,000 to 150,000 VND/kg; loin ribs and baby back ribs range from 160,000 to 180,000 VND/kg... These prices are 15,000 to 20,000 VND/kg higher than before Tet.

Ms. Mai Thi Xoan, a vendor at An Dong Market, An Duong, Hai Phong City, said that for over a month now, the price of live pigs has been increasing - the price changes every day. Consumers tend to tighten their spending, they switch to buying other cheaper foods, the purchasing power of pork has decreased, and Ms. Xoan's family business has also been affected.

"Before, my family had to sell 100kg of pig every day, all in the morning. But recently, pork sales have been slow almost every day. Especially in the first two days of the week, my family only sold ¾ of the imported meat. If this situation continues, we will suffer heavy losses, and it will be difficult to sustain the business in the long term," said Ms. Xoan.

Similar to Ms. Xoan's mood in An Dong market, Ms. Bui Thi Thuan, a famous pork vendor at Minh Kha market, Dong Thai ward (An Duong district, Hai Phong city) is also in a state of limited sales due to decreased purchasing power.

Pork prices increase but purchasing power is low, so sellers do not dare to import much.

According to Ms. Thuan, the current price of live pigs is also at its peak, even the highest in the past 3 years. The price of imported pigs is high but the supply is not abundant.

In concentrated livestock farming areas, most farmers do not have pigs to supply the market because many farms and households sold out their herds before and after Tet. At this time, farms and households are mainly new to the herd, and the pigs are still small.

Currently, Mrs. Thuan's family is importing live pigs at the farm at a price of 77-79 thousand VND/kg of live pigs. Every day, Mrs. Thuan's family usually sells 5 to 7 pigs to customers in the afternoon. However, after Tet, the price of pigs increased again, the supply was not abundant, and purchasing power was low, so Mrs. Thuan's family did not dare to import as much as before.

"The price of imported live pigs is high, so I have to increase the price according to the market. If I sell a lot and run out of stock, I still make a profit, but if I sell unsold products every day, it's like working for free," Ms. Thuan shared.

Lack of supply

Ms. Pham Thi Hoa - owner of a farm that raises pigs for CP Livestock Joint Stock Company in Dung Tien Commune (Vinh Bao District, Hai Phong City) said that her family raises pigs for processing so they do not have to worry about market prices going up and down.

The company provides everything from breeds, food, and medicine, her family only has the pigsty and labor to take care of them. When they are ready to sell, the company comes to weigh the pigs and pays them according to the weight of the pigs in the sty.

However, some small farms have to do their own accounting, so since the price of piglets, animal feed, and veterinary medicine increased, raising pigs was not profitable, so in Ms. Hoa's hometown, many farmers have given up raising pigs and switched to other jobs.

According to many pig farmers today, although pork is selling at a good price, investing in restocking is difficult. Many households have lost all their pig herds due to storm No. 3 and damaged barns. Repairing and returning to production is also a problem.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Loi, in Dai Dien village, Tan Vien commune (An Lao district) said that as a farmer, the two most worrying issues are output and disease situation. With crops already difficult, raising livestock is much more difficult because the cost is very high, if the price is low or there is an epidemic, the loss to farmers is very large.

Recently, pork prices have been high, so if there are products to sell regularly, farmers will make a profit.

However, in the concentrated livestock farming area of Tan Vien commune, most farmers do not have pigs to sell because many farms and households sold out their herds before Tet. Currently, the farms and households here are mainly new to the herd, and the pigs are still small and cannot be sold.

Meat prices are lower than before because purchasing power is low, so sellers do not import much.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, owner of a pig farm in Vinh An commune (Vinh Bao district, Hai Phong city) said that although live pigs are selling at good prices, households currently have no pigs to sell.

Most of the facilities of pig farms have been damaged since storm No. 3. Conditions for renovating and repairing barns are limited, so investment is patchy and the number of new herds for production is also less.

"To overcome difficulties and develop stable pig farming, pig farmers also hope for timely support from the city to create conditions for farms and ranches to access preferential loans to reinvest in developing pig farming.

Along with that, banks should also consider postponing and extending debt for large livestock farms and facilities when there is a need to invest in renovating facilities to serve stable livestock farming," said Mr. Hung.
