Mr. Lo Van Toan, Head of the Youth and School Department, Provincial Youth Union, said: “When I am 18” is a comprehensiveeducational program for high school youth union members. The program aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills when entering adulthood, while also creating a useful playground for them to express themselves and prepare for the future.
Based on the direction from the Provincial Youth Union, the Youth Union of schools has proactively developed and implemented the program "When I am 18" with practical activities suitable to the actual conditions of each locality. These activities not only focus on educating revolutionary ideals, ethics, lifestyle, and law, but also foster soft skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, critical thinking, admissions counseling, and career orientation suitable to abilities, interests, and social needs. In addition, units also promote experiential activities and practical training such as volunteering for the community, visiting "red addresses", visiting production facilities, culture - arts, and sports , helping students develop comprehensively.
Typical activities include flag-raising ceremonies, school radio, newsletters, forums, competitions, festivals, volunteer activities, and coming-of-age ceremonies. With the motto of taking students as the center, many units have established Media Clubs, which are run by students themselves, from idea generation, content editing to implementation. The content of the program not only spreads educational values in a practical way but also becomes an open space where students can express their feelings, share their thoughts and opinions in a positive and creative way. At the same time, this is also a bridge for teachers and parents to better understand students' thoughts and aspirations - things that are often difficult to grasp within the framework of a traditional classroom.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Bac, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Bac Son High School (Bac Son District) informed: The program "When I am 18" is implemented weekly throughout the school year. There are 2 radio news bulletins each week, at least 1 flag-raising activity each month, and related information is updated daily on the Youth Union's fanpage. In particular, the coming-of-age ceremony for grade 12 students at the end of the school year is always anticipated and actively participated in by the students.
In the 2024-2025 school year, the program will continue to be improved and expanded with many new features, notably the integration of activities related to current issues such as cyber security, cultural behavior in the digital environment and reading promotion. In addition, schools are encouraged to build their own models, suitable to the characteristics of each unit.
Typically, at Dinh Lap High School, the coming-of-age ceremony was organized in the form of a "memory talk show", where students, parents and teachers shared touching stories about their journey to adulthood. At Huu Lung High School, the career orientation forum was organized in an open question-and-answer format, creating opportunities for students to directly dialogue with experts and alumni about suitable career choices.
Do Phuong Mai, a student of class 12A6, Hoang Van Thu High School, shared: There are many situations in life that make me confused, such as conflicts with friends, pressure from parents' expectations, or stress before exams... Thanks to the program "When I am 18", I have learned a lot of knowledge and skills to solve those problems. I find this a very practical and meaningful program.
According to statistics from school unions, through the program, more than 80% of grade 12 students participate in career orientation activities; 100% of students have access to legal knowledge and life skills through flag-raising activities, school radio, seminars, thematic forums... This is where students are listened to, oriented and develop their personal capacity, while affirming their mettle in the journey to adulthood.
With close attention from the Youth Union, proactive support from the school and positive response from students, the program "When I am 18" in Lang Son is really effective. Thereby, it contributes to sowing the seeds of life ideals, arousing the sense of responsibility, the desire to live beautifully and usefully in each young person on the journey to adulthood.
