A son in Taiwan devised a clever plan to help his father recover money from an online investment scam gang.
The son convinced the scammers that they would receive further investment, ultimately helping his father recover 700,000 New Taiwan Dollars (over 544 million Vietnamese Dong) that he had been tricked into investing, according to the South China Morning Post on December 26.

This incident was revealed by the victim's son in an online post and subsequently reported by Taiwan's EBC News on December 17th.
Details about the father and son, including their names and ages, have not been released.
According to EBC News, the father, who lives in Nantou County in central Taiwan, became the victim of an online investment scam. The online scammer, posing as a woman, repeatedly flattered and persuaded him to invest 700,000 New Taiwan Dollars in cash.
"The scammers called my father 'Dad,' constantly asking, 'How are you, Dad? Did you have dinner tonight? Did you sleep well?' They kept asking about his health," the son told EBC News.
The father installed an app on his phone, recommended by the scam group, which announced that the total investment had increased to 1.3 million New Taiwan Dollars (US$40,000), and the profit was over 600,000 New Taiwan Dollars.
But when the father eagerly withdrew his profits, the scammer said, "You need to reach a certain amount before you can withdraw."
The son became suspicious after his father complained about not being able to withdraw his money. "After my dad shared this, I went home and started watching anti-scam videos on YouTube. I stumbled upon a video where the YouTuber said, 'You need to offer a larger bait than you lost to have a chance of getting your money back,'" the son recounted.
"Inspired by that, I decided to implement a similar strategy by using my father's phone to reconnect with the scammer," the son added.
The son, posing as his father, told the scammers that two friends wanted to invest 500,000 New Taiwan Dollars and 1 million New Taiwan Dollars respectively.
When the conversation went smoothly, the son shifted his strategy by claiming he urgently needed money to solve a family problem, requesting to withdraw 700,000 New Taiwan Dollars from the profits shown on the phone app.
Initially, the scammers were hesitant, but the son spent hours persuading them, even playing three different roles, including two as interested investors who seriously inquired about investment details.
Finally, recognizing a lucrative opportunity, the scammers agreed to return the 700,000 New Taiwan Dollars.
Shortly afterward, the scammers continued their plan, claiming the app now showed a profit of 2.35 million New Taiwan Dollars but demanding a 5-10% tax before the father could withdraw any money. However, the father was not fooled this time.
The son's cleverness has received much praise online. "This is truly anti-fraud work," one online observer commented.
