Being psychologically manipulated, old lady LTH sold all her life's savings of more than 2 billion VND in gold to transfer to scammers.

At approximately 5 PM on December 3, 2025, the Criminal Police Department (Hanoi Police) received a report from BIDV Ha Tinh regarding a suspected case of telephone fraud.

According to initial information, Mrs. LTH (76 years old, residing in Thach Xuan commune) received a call from an individual informing her that her son had been involved in a serious traffic accident and urgently needed money for treatment. After being psychologically manipulated and repeatedly threatened, Mrs. H, following the caller's instructions, sold all her life savings of gold, totaling over 2 billion VND, to transfer money to the callers.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of Thanh Sen Ward Police Station quickly consulted with bank officials to devise appropriate psychological support measures for Mrs. LTH and to track down the fraudsters.

Upon arriving at the bank, BIDV Ha Tinh staff repeatedly explained and analyzed the unusual circumstances of the case and advised the elderly woman to stop the transaction. However, due to being deeply manipulated and believing her son was in critical condition, she resolutely refused to listen, continuously demanding that the money be transferred by any means necessary.

Faced with the urgent situation, representatives from BIDV Ha Tinh immediately notified the Criminal Police Department and the police stations of Thanh Sen ward and Thach Xuan commune to coordinate the handling of the case. After being directly explained the situation by police officers , Ms. H. calmed down and agreed to stop the transfer.

The Criminal Police Department (Ha Tinh Provincial Police) warns: This is not the only case where unscrupulous individuals exploit the gullibility and anxiety of the public, especially the elderly, to commit fraud. The tactic of impersonating children involved in traffic accidents is becoming increasingly common and sophisticated, making it easy for many people, especially the elderly, to fall into the trap.

People need to be extremely vigilant about calls from unknown sources, especially those requesting urgent money transfers. If you encounter a suspicious situation, immediately contact family, friends, or authorities to verify the information. Every citizen should remember the phone numbers of relevant authorities such as the police and customer service centers of money transfer services so they can respond promptly in emergency situations.
