In order to build workshops and factories in an increasingly bright - green - clean direction, in the period of 2020-2025, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has expanded the model of bringing parks into mines and factories. This is a top priority task along with production, contributing to gradually greening brown areas in accordance with the policy of transforming the economic growth model from "brown" to "green" of Quang Ninh. Up to this point, the model has initially helped TKV enterprises change their development thinking towards "green" production.
Greening the mining environment
At the end of 2021, Deo Nai Coal Joint Stock Company organized the installation of a signboard for the "Mining Campus" project undertaken by the Company's Youth Union. The project has a total investment of more than 6.1 billion VND and is being implemented at 13 locations on the construction sites and workshops located in the mine. The project aims to ensure drainage, limit the situation of soil and rock being washed away, minimize dust and noise, improve the environmental landscape of the production site, the executive offices of the construction sites, workshops, etc.
To implement this project, the Youth Union of Deo Nai Coal Joint Stock Company mobilized thousands of union members and young people to strengthen and upgrade roads, stone embankments, concrete curbs to ensure safety, prevent landslides, strengthen ditches and drainage ditches, plant trees, renovate campuses, flower gardens, and create a green - clean - beautiful environment.
Secretary of the Youth Union of Deo Nai Coal Joint Stock Company Tran Viet Anh said: The project "Campus in the mine" affirms the pioneering role of young people in production and environmental protection. After more than 1 year of maintaining the model, it has not only changed the appearance of the landscape of construction sites and workshops but also raised awareness of environmental protection for workers, thereby contributing to improving working conditions.
To continue promoting the effectiveness and successfully replicating this model, currently, the youth force in the workshops is actively registering to undertake youth projects, youth management models; participating in environmental management; planting and caring for trees in mine waste areas, factory premises, and offices; and implementing well the movements "Volunteer Saturday" and "Green Sunday".
To effectively implement this model, on average each year, Deo Nai Coal Joint Stock Company allocates 70-80 billion VND for environmental protection. Up to now, the company has invested in and put into use 5 high-pressure fan-type dust suppression misting systems. In addition, the company has organized the planting and maintenance of 290 hectares of trees at the waste dump (Nam Deo Nai, Nam Khe Tam - Dong Khe Sim). This is a solid "green fence" system, helping the company minimize dust emissions from the waste dump, protecting the environment of the surrounding residential areas.
Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company is the first unit in the coal industry to implement the roadmap to convert mining from open pit to underground in 2012. The company has invested synchronously in production lines, technology, factory systems, operating houses... In particular, from 2017 to present, along with focusing on investing in new equipment and technology to boost production, the company has also paid attention to environmental protection, considering this one of the key tasks to ensure the goals of a green, clean, and beautiful environment in production.
One of the top priority solutions in the current environmental protection work of Than Nui Beo is to actively implement the model of bringing parks into mines and factories. Since implementing the model, the company has had many active activities to promote environmental protection right at the construction sites and workshops such as: Planting trees in the waste dump area that has stopped dumping and the area adjacent to the residential area, the road leading to the waste dump with a total area of 17 hectares, worth 33.5 billion VND; planting trees to create landscape in the car garage area of the premises +35 Production Control Center, worth more than 800 million VND...
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, Deputy Head of Investment and Environment Department (Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company), said: Currently, on the roads leading to the mine, the company has arranged water spraying trucks to suppress dust and assigned workers to regularly clean up, ensuring the production area environment is always clean, without affecting residents living on both sides of the road. In the coal mine, the workshops all implement good industrial hygiene, preventing dust from spreading to the surrounding environment; regularly checking the misting systems installed at the screening clusters and coal areas, promptly detecting and repairing damaged misting systems.
For the mine waste area, the company has so far covered 144 hectares with greenery. It is expected that in 2023-2024, the company will continue to plant 6.8 hectares of new trees to create a landscape for the surrounding environment. The above environmental projects and works have helped the company successfully build a model of bringing parks into the mine and factory, thereby contributing to the harmonious development of Nui Beo mine between production and sustainable environmental protection.
Continue to spread and expand
Currently, TKV has 42 production units operating in the province, with nearly 80,000 employees. In the coal production sector alone, there are 17 coal mining companies (4 open-pit units and 13 underground units). The coal output of the units is about 39-40 million tons, accounting for over 95% of the total coal mining output of TKV.
The production and business process, with many fields such as mining, electricity production, industrial explosives, especially coal mining and processing in Quang Ninh , is a production field that affects the environment. Therefore, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group always pays attention to and focuses on implementing well the work of linking production with environmental protection and sustainable development, considering this a top priority task along with production, contributing to building a green, clean and beautiful living and working environment.
Currently, 100% of TKV units have successfully replicated the model of bringing parks into mines and factories. Notably, in 2021, for the first time, TKV issued a set of criteria for a bright - green - clean environment. This is an important basis for units to closely follow the criteria and allocate adequate funding to invest in environmental protection. Through the review and assessment of the Environmental Department (TKV), after more than 1 year of applying this set of criteria, units have allocated large funds to invest in building the landscape of the workshop and factory campus to become increasingly green - clean - beautiful.
Over the years, TKV's open-pit coal production units, underground mines, coal preparation plants, mechanics, and electricity have built flower gardens and green trees in the office premises of workshops in the mines, at industrial sites, in factory premises, etc., creating an environmental landscape according to the criteria of light - green - clean and the policy of bringing parks into the mines and factories of the Group. Throughout the production development process, TKV's environmental protection action message is "Associating production with environmental protection, greening brown areas". Realizing this goal, recently thousands of hectares of TKV's waste dumps have been greened.
In 2023, TKV will plant 1.2 million trees on an area of 210 hectares. In the first quarter alone, TKV planted more than 32 hectares of trees at quarries and waste dumps. In addition, wastewater, dust and noise systems are increasingly being treated synchronously and minimized. These are TKV's drastic solutions in environmental protection, contributing significantly to the transformation of the growth model from "brown" to "green".
Hon Gai Coal Selection Company invested in planting many green tree systems in the Lang Khanh port area.
In the coming time, TKV will continue to implement comprehensive environmental protection plans according to the cluster model at units; urge the approved comprehensive environmental protection plans at Km6 port, Ha Tu mine, Lang Khanh port, Coal preparation plant and Cua Ong port, Bang Nau landfill. Carry out the collection and thorough treatment of all types of waste, especially the management of hazardous waste in accordance with the provisions of law. Be proactive in environmental sanitation, dust control work focusing on landfills, roads near urban residential areas such as Bang Nau landfill, Dong Cao Son, Nam Khe Tam - Dong Khe Sim, especially strengthening dust control during the hot season.
TKV will continue to review and inspect the dumping work to comply with the approved design and dumping process to ensure safety and environmental protection in dumping activities. To harmonize coal production with environmental protection, the Group will continue to effectively operate the invested environmental works, continue to start new environmental works, especially works to improve the landscape of production sites, and implement the goal of "Greening the mining environment and bringing parks into mines and factories".
