Before entering the match, the Laos team was of course considered the "underdog" team compared to Indonesia. In the last 10 matches, Laos had only 1 draw and lost 9 matches. However, that 2-2 draw was more than 12 years ago in the group stage of the AFF Cup 2012 (the previous name of the ASEAN Cup) held in Malaysia. The results in the first match of the group stage of the ASEAN Cup 2024 were also completely opposite, when Indonesia won 1-0 against Myanmar, while Laos lost 1-4 to Vietnam.

4 goals in 9 minutes

However, when the opening whistle blew, the representative of the land of a million elephants was the team that dominated the game and scored the opening goal in the 9th minute. Bounkong passed the ball intelligently for Panyavong to break through and finish off the Indonesian goalkeeper. It seemed that the early goal would make the match easier for the away team, but just 3 minutes later, the Indonesian team equalized 1-1. Taking advantage of the indecisive handling of the Lao defense, Kadek Arel scored the equalizer.
Then Laos team took the lead 2-1. However, Indonesia team escaped with the "old trick" of long throw-in of Pratama Arhan.
In just 18 minutes, the match had 4 goals scored. In contrast to that explosion, the remaining minutes of the first half could not witness any more goals. Entering the second half, with the position of the "upper team" and pressure from the home crowd, the Indonesian team rushed to attack the Laos goal. However, the goal still did not come to them.

"Crazy" match

Tragedy struck the home team in the 69th minute, when "prodigy" Marselino Ferdinan was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. This meant that this midfielder would definitely miss the match against Vietnam on December 15. In the midst of mounting difficulties, the representative of the "island of thousands" unexpectedly scored a goal to raise the score to 3-2 in the 72nd minute. From a corner kick on the right wing, Muhammad Ferarri jumped up to comfortably head the ball. The shot was not too dangerous, but goalkeeper Souvannasangso did not block it well, allowing the ball to go into the net. Dramatically, just 5 minutes later, the away team scored a goal to bring the score to 3-3. After Thongkhamsavath's effort to save the ball, Phanthavong comfortably finished from close range into the Indonesian net. After that, the home team continued to attack fiercely to seek victory at home. But with only 10 men, the Indonesian team could not score any more goals. The match ended 3-3.
The ASEAN Cup will take place from December 8, 2024, with the final match taking place on January 5, 2025. The tournament will feature 10 teams from Southeast Asia. Group A includes Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor Leste. Group B includes Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos. The Vietnamese team will meet Laos (December 9), Indonesia (December 15), the Philippines (December 18), and Myanmar (December 21). In the group stage, the teams will compete in a round-robin format, with each team playing two home and two away matches. At the end of the group stage, the two teams ranked first and second in each group will advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals and final will be played over two home and away matches. In the semi-finals, the away goals format will be applied. In the ASEAN Cup 2024, the Vietnamese team's goal is to reach the final. The Vietnamese team will face strong competition from Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Previously, in the ASEAN Cup 2022, Vietnam accepted the runner-up position after losing to Thailand in the final match.
