3 red cards in one match at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ On the morning of June 17, Benfica struggled to a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors in Group C.
The former Manchester United star started the match but only played for 20 minutes before being substituted due to injury. This is the fourth time the Spanish midfielder has suffered a muscle injury since joining Boca in January.
After leaving the field, Herrera sat on the bench and was sent off shortly after for overreacting. While the referee reviewed Nicolas Otamendi’s penalty via VAR, Herrera launched into a harsh tirade, to the point where a security guard and a member of the coaching staff had to intervene to calm him down.
Herrera received a red card on the bench. |
The red card means Herrera will miss Boca Juniors' next FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ group stage match against Bayern Munich on June 21.
Since joining Boca Juniors, Herrera has played 9 matches but has faced 4 injuries in the past 6 months. The severity of this injury has not been announced, but the risk of the former MU star missing the rest of the season is possible.
In the recent match between Boca and Benfica, both teams played with great passion and determination. In addition to Herrera, Jorge Figal of Boca and Andrea Belotti of Benfica also received red cards.
Boca led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Merentiel and Battaglia, but Angel di Maria and Otamendi scored twice in the second half to earn Benfica a point from their opening game.
