Da Nang strives to become the "capital" of Asian marine sports events

On the afternoon of November 27, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City organized a workshop on "Developing high-performance sports and sports economy of Da Nang city in the period 2025-2030, with a vision to 2045".

The event is considered an important exchange forum, bringing together managers, experts, businesses and social organizations to seek breakthrough solutions for the new development stage of Da Nang sports .

Da Nang strives to become the — Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

In her opening speech, Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi emphasized that sports are not only physical strength but also spiritual resources, contributing to improving the quality of life and building new people.

According to Ms. Thi, high-performance sports are the pride of each country and each locality, and are a symbol of will, determination and aspiration to rise up. Each medal and each victory in the national and international arena is a testament to the strength and mettle of the Vietnamese people.

Along with that, the sports economy is a new and potential resource, not only a service industry, but also a driving force to promote tourism, cultural and entertainment industries, create jobs and contribute to GRDP growth, promoting sustainable development.

Da Nang aims to become one of the leading sports centers in the country, with athletes competing and winning medals in continental and world arenas.

The city also aims to build a system of facilities qualified to host major sporting events and develop marine sports economy to actively contribute to socio-economic growth.

However, according to the city leaders, the current development process still faces many difficulties: mechanisms and policies have not kept up with reality; sports facilities are not synchronized; human resources are limited; sports businesses are small and the market is not diversified. Ms. Thi believes that these bottlenecks need to be resolved with a new vision, flexible mechanisms and the cooperation of the whole society.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City, Tao Viet Hai, said that in recent years, Da Nang's high-performance sports have continuously achieved results exceeding targets. From 2021 to now, the city has won 1,183 gold medals, 1,053 silver medals and 1,468 bronze medals at national tournaments; 148 gold medals, 66 silver medals and 86 bronze medals at international competitions; and contributed many coaches and athletes to the national team.

In addition, the socialization of sports has recorded positive changes through a series of major events such as the Danang International Marathon, IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam, Vietnam - Brazil Football Festival, Vietnam - England, Pickleball PPA Tour Asia - MB Vietnam Cup...

However, the city's sports economy has not yet developed commensurate with its potential, and a clear ecosystem has not yet been formed. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism is developing a Sports Economy Development Project for the 2026-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, and at the same time adjusting the High Performance Sports Development Project to suit the new context.

At the workshop, experts agreed that Da Nang needs a comprehensive strategy and breakthrough directions to improve sports performance and strongly develop the sports economy.

Many presentations offered practical solutions such as developing R&D for key athletes; applying science, technology and digital transformation in training; developing marine sports and recreational sports associated with tourism; promoting international cooperation; investing in infrastructure and high-quality human resources.

Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Thanh, former Deputy Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, emphasized the importance of synchronously applying science in athlete training, building a key sports force with a long-term strategy. Dr. Pham Hoang Tung proposed solutions on resources, facilities and mechanisms for developing key sports, in line with the goal of making Da Nang become the leading marine sports center in Asia...

The workshop received 9 presentations from experts and units, providing many insights. The opinions were all aimed at the common goal: Da Nang becomes a key national high-performance sports center and a leader in marine sports, leading in both achievements and training and competition destinations in the region; contributing many key athletes in Olympic sports and strong sports to the national team and striving to win medals at the ASIAD and Olympics.

The city strives to become Asia's leading center for marine sports services and economy, building a modern sports - tourism - creative industry ecosystem, enhancing the brand "Da Nang - City of international marine sports events and festivals", attracting 10-12 million tourists each year, of which 20-25% are visitors from sports events.

With determination and long-term vision, Da Nang hopes to create a strong shift, making high-performance sports and sports economy become important factors in the strategy of developing a modern, dynamic and livable urban area.
