Many children are addicted to using phones, TVs, iPads... which reduces their eyesight and can lead to psychological diseases. According to Ms. TV, residing in My Hiep Son commune, Hon Dat district (Kien Giang), her nephew is being treated at the Department of Psychology, Children's Hospital ( Ho Chi Minh City). Because of being busy, Ms. V's siblings have little time to care for their child. Ms. V's nephew is in 4th grade and has been exposed to video games since he was a child. In the past, he played gold mining, puzzles, and later played shooting games and violent games.
Chi V said that recently, she often talked to herself, got angry, broke things, hurt herself and attacked others. The symptoms became more severe so her family asked for her to stay home from school to be hospitalized for treatment.
"The doctor said my child had bipolar disorder due to the influence of the actions of the characters in the game. After a month of treatment, my child's mental state has stabilized but I have not been able to leave the hospital and go to school yet. My parents have temporarily stopped working to take care of me. The family spent 100 million VND to cover my child's travel, living expenses and hospital fees," said Ms. V.
Many parents often give their children phones to use without setting a time limit or checking the content.
Mr. V.D.C, residing in Kien Luong district ( Kien Giang ) regrets not managing the time and content his child watches on his phone. Mr. C's child is in 3rd grade, before he studied well, was friendly and polite to everyone. Because Mr. C and his wife were too busy with work, he let his child use the phone for entertainment after school.
After half a year of using the phone, my child became sullen, quiet, and did not like to interact with anyone. I thought it was because he was stressed from studying. Then the school reported that he brought his phone to class, did not concentrate on studying, and often got into fights with his friends. I asked him but he got angry and yelled at me, so I punished him and took away his phone.
"Checking my phone, I found many violent games and a history of websites with unhealthy content. After that, I took my child to a psychologist in Ho Chi Minh City and was told that my child showed signs of depression and had to take medication and have check-ups twice a month. Up to now, my child has been treated for more than half a year," said Mr. V.D.C.
The daughter (8 years old) of Ms. HTVA, residing in An Bien district (Kien Giang) is being treated for depression because she watched many clips containing toxic content on TikTok. When busy, Ms. A often gives her phone to her child to play with. After a while, Ms. VA discovered that her child is afraid of many things, cannot control her emotions, sometimes cries or laughs continuously. Ms. A's child has been taking medication combined with psychological therapy for more than 3 months.
According to psychologist Dr. Nguyen Thi Van - lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City), children should not be exposed to electronic devices too much because it will limit their ability to communicate socially, reduce their thinking development and cause psychological disorders.
Parents should encourage their children to participate in many extracurricular activities and life skills programs to interact with friends; regularly monitor their children's psychological expressions, and should not subjectively ignore unusual signs of behavior or psychology; should not get angry or punish when their children are irritable or break things, but should seek the support of experts and psychologists.
