In the middle of the peaceful countryside of Son Quang village (Duc Lang commune, Duc Tho), rows of modern greenhouses for growing melons stretch out, standing out in the middle of the fields. This is a proud achievement from the hard-working start-up journey of the young man Nguyen Doan Vu (born in 1995). According to Mr. Vu, after graduating from high school in 2013, he went to the South to work in many different jobs. Once, when he visited a relative's greenhouse model of growing melons, he was deeply impressed by the modern farming method, which had a systematic process and brought high economic efficiency. This inspired him with the idea of returning to his hometown to develop the economy from agriculture.
Thinking is doing, at the end of 2021, he decided to return to his hometown to start a business with a melon model in a greenhouse. With the capital he had accumulated and borrowed more from the bank, he rented land and workers to grow melons. To give the melons the best growing conditions, Mr. Vu invested in a modern Israeli drip irrigation system that integrates automatic water and fertilizer regulation, helping to save labor and minimize pests.
Besides, he also focuses on building a solid greenhouse system to avoid negative weather factors such as rain, frost and prevent insects and pests from entering, helping plants grow healthily and evenly.
Melons weigh from 2 - 3kg, meeting standards in appearance and quality. After harvesting, the melons are sold retail at local markets and exported wholesale to wholesale markets in Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Hanoi . Thanks to self-taught knowledge and experience passed down from relatives, Mr. Vu had a successful first melon season. Melons grown in greenhouses grow well, yield high yields, have beautiful fruits and a sweet taste, and are favored by the local market. Seeing the potential, he boldly expanded the scale step by step. To date, his melon garden has a total of 12 greenhouses, each 1,000m² wide and can grow about 3,300 plants/crop. The wholesale price of melons ranges from 20,000 - 23,000 VND/kg, the retail price is about 30,000 VND/kg. Each year, Mr. Vu grows 3 crops, each greenhouse yields nearly 6 tons/crop. Thus, 12 greenhouses harvest more than 200 tons of melons and bring in nearly 4 billion VND in revenue each year. To have round, sweet and safe melons, Mr. Vu's plant care process is carried out meticulously step by step. He shared: " From the time of sowing seeds, tending plants, pruning, pollinating flowers to selecting fruit, bagging fruit... everything requires meticulousness and precision. If there is too much water, the melons will easily become waterlogged, and if there is not enough water, the fruit will be small and less sweet. Fertilizer also needs to be in the right dosage and at the right time. If one step is wrong, the whole crop can be considered a total loss... ".
Not only striving to develop the family economy, Mr. Vu also hopes that his model will become a place of learning and inspiration for young people in the area who intend to start a business. For him, success is not only measured by profit but also by helping the community develop together. Currently, Mr. Vu's melon growing model also creates regular jobs for 4 local workers, with an income of 250,000 VND/person/day. During peak harvest periods, the number of seasonal workers is also increased to ensure progress. Mr. Vu's melon growing model has received attention from many local departments and organizations, becoming a regular destination for delegations to visit and learn from experiences. Evaluating the startup model of Mr. Nguyen Doan Vu, Ms. Cu Thi Tuyen - Secretary of the Duc Lang Commune Youth Union said: “ Nguyen Doan Vu is one of the dynamic and pioneering members in applying technology to agricultural production. Vu's model of growing melons in greenhouses not only brings high economic efficiency but also creates a great influence in the youth movement to establish a career in the locality. Through Vu's methodical, creative and persistent way of doing things, many young people in the commune have more confidence and motivation to boldly invest and develop modern and sustainable agricultural models .”
