Coming to Tan Thanh village these days, it is easy to feel the bustling, urgent atmosphere of the people busy preparing for a new crop. Standing out among them is Mr. Pham Van Hoan - a typical farmer, whose eyes always shine with joy when the price of silkworm cocoons is at a high level, opening up hope for a bumper year. It is known that his career path has not always been smooth.
His family suffered heavy losses when storm No. 3 swept through in 2024. With the spirit of "surviving the storm", Mr. Hoan and his family quickly set about restoring the mulberry garden and continuing to engage in silkworm farming.
He said: "Currently, my family is cultivating 2 hectares of mulberry, mainly hybrid mulberry varieties with high productivity. In addition, I have also invested in building a 300 m2 silkworm house, ensuring the best conditions for the care and nurturing of silkworms. Each year, we harvest over 2 tons of cocoons. With the current selling price, this model brings a fairly stable source of income, averaging nearly 400 million VND per year."
Ms. Hoang Thi Mai in Dai Thang village, one of the 7 members of the cooperative group growing mulberry and raising silkworms, shared: "Dai Phac land is very suitable for mulberry trees to grow. Thanks to the favorable climate, members of the cooperative group can raise 8-10 batches of silkworms each year, even 15-16 batches if they have a silkworm house large enough to raise pillows. Compared to rice cultivation, growing mulberry and raising silkworms gives 3.5-4 times higher profits, the investment cost is not large and the capital recovery is quick."
Implementing the Resolution of the People's Council of Van Yen district and related directive documents, Dai Phac commune has developed a specific plan to implement the Project on growing mulberry and raising silkworms in 2025. The plan focuses on mobilizing the participation of the entire political system, promoting propaganda work to raise people's awareness of restructuring the agricultural sector, and encouraging the expansion of mulberry growing areas with new high-yield varieties.
At the same time, the commune also focuses on guiding and instructing people to access scientific advances and take advantage of support policies to improve economic efficiency from mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising.
Based on the district's project, Dai Phac commune has included the content of sericulture development in the Party Committee's resolution, the commune People's Council resolution and the socio-economic development plan for the period 2021 - 2026.
Comrade Le Quang Dao - Secretary of the Party Committee of Dai Phac commune shared: "We aim to expand 30 hectares of mulberry in 5 villages in the area by 2025. People are encouraged to choose new mulberry varieties, apply the correct technical process from planting to care to achieve high productivity. The commune also focuses on applying scientific and technical advances to increase farmers' income, create local jobs, and attract businesses to invest in deep processing of mulberry and silkworm cocoon products."
To realize this goal, Dai Phac commune has stepped up propaganda and mobilized people to plant new high-yield mulberry varieties on ineffective land areas, change the crop structure appropriately; coordinate with specialized agencies to organize training courses and vocational training on mulberry planting and silkworm raising techniques, disease prevention skills and concentrated silkworm raising techniques. People are also instructed on how to use mulberry leaf cutting machines to improve productivity and stabilize cocoon output.
Dai Phac aims to build pilot models in silkworm farming, apply modern technology, strictly control the quality of breeding eggs, silkworms and limit risks in the production process. In particular, the commune has proactively and promptly implemented support policies such as: support for new planting, building silkworm houses, purchasing equipment...
These policies are all implemented publicly, transparently, with full supervision and participation of all levels of government, mass organizations and the people themselves. In Dai Phac commune, the silkworm farming industry is making significant progress. The whole commune currently has more than 30 hectares of mulberry, 40 silkworm farming households, 2 cooperatives and 1 cooperative maintaining activities in the field of silkworm farming.
To achieve the goal of developing the sustainable silkworm farming industry, in 2025, Dai Phac will focus on implementing the chain linkage model according to Resolution 69 of the Provincial People's Council, and at the same time expand 10.2 hectares of mulberry. Along with that, the commune plans to invest in upgrading infrastructure by building 14 large silkworm houses, 5 silkworm houses, repairing 3 silkworm houses and equipping 16 more nets.
With a profit margin 3.5 - 4 times higher than that of rice and corn cultivation, low investment costs, and a quick payback period, this model has brought a stable source of income to many households. This is a solid foundation for people to confidently stick with the profession, contributing to affirming that mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising is an effective direction in rural economic development, not only in Dai Phac commune but also in the entire Van Yen district.
